24" Leveractions

Typically I'm drawn more to the 16" barreled levers because they just fit me perfect (ie. I'm short).

They are probably the best of both worlds, sufficient enough power and accuracy for anything I'd ever use it for, and about as handy as it'll ever get.

I've either bought them factory or cut down a 20" barrel down just to have one in the caliber I wanted.

Anyway the last few years I've really been intrigued by the 24" rifles. I had a chance to shoot one in 44mag, and it was as pleasant as an experience as I have had with a full mag load. It actually came to the shoulder nicely and balanced alot better than I thought it would.

Since then, I've acquired a few that I really like.

My latest is the Win94 Legacy in 44mag (the middle) Just picked it up this morning, and it's alot smoother than any of my other crossbolt/tang safety models.

From top to bottom:

Win 9410 Traditional
Win 94 Legacy 45Colt
Win 94 Legacy 44mag
Marlin 1895 LTD V 45-70

Sweet rifles,thanks for posting. :D I like my Rossi M92 24" Octagon in 45 Colt.Yup it is front heavy, but it swings to the shoulder and just points and swings like a skeet gun.I luv it for target shooting and plink'n. :D

I prefer the 24" myself, great sight radius with a tang sight, like the feel too.

In the field I believe I have better control of the muzzle, however, it is extra weight for a long day of carrying.

In general I would say 24" for arn sights, and 20" if scoped.

the full octagon short rifle is the epitomy of rifles espeecially in the pistol calibers, buy build or borrow one you'll never put it down.

24"....my favorite! Love the octagon and love the extra weight up front. Gives it some heft. It feels like a rifle ought to feel to me.

In my book the only thing better balancing than a 24" barrel is a 26"! :lol:

Not sure if anything is more 'right' than throwing up a long octagon barrel when there is a buck or bull for the takin'!

Beautiful rifles. Thanks for posting. I know what you are talking about. There is something to be said for the elegance of the longer rifles.

long barrels vs. short barrels

When it comes to shooting its nice to shoot long barreled guns. Years ago I discovered this with old bolt military surplus guns....its quieter and keeps the muzzle blast further from your ears and gives you max velocity too...Welcome to the long barrel clan. I could never figure out that the same people who hunted and shot 28" barreled shotguns thought a 24" rifle was too long and cumbersome. I think the manufactures were behind the short barrel thing to save metal. If they save 2" (22" instead of 24"they have saved enough barrel to make a 22" barrel for every 10 guns sold. Don't think the new Ruger 16" barrel in 300 mag is any joy to shoot. One sold on gun broker.com for $300 a few weeks ago. The original owner went deaf, blind and poor from shooting it, I am sure. Besides if the same gun was a 3006 with a 24" barrel it probably would have performed as well as a 16" mag....just food to think on. .afish4570
