List of tang sights like the Lyman 30 1/2?

Post by Canuck Bob »

I was impressed with the pictures of the 30 1/2 on the recent sight thread. What other early sights come with windage adjustment that is similar? I'm familiar with the modern Marbles Tang Sight. Pictures would be appreciated if possible, please?

.

I'm thinkin' that any such list would be a little thin, because (in most cases) a windage-adjustable tang sight isn't really needed.

I've found that windage adjustments are usually only needed to zero the rifle, and that's easily adjusted by shimming the underside of the tang sight base on the appropriate side ( if properly done, any shimming is virtually un-noticeable).

Tang sights will usually have an elevation adjustment, as there may be reason (like the different silly-wet target distances) to adjust for range in the field or shooting range.

The one somebody makes for Taurus to sell under their brand has both windage and elevation adjustments, and I've had no problems with mine.

The red dot of nail polish was just just put there a a marking-point to be sure nothing turned that shouldn't (and it didnt).

The tang screws were off-the-shelf ones from ACE Hardware that will be ground and blued later.

Tang sights....my fetish

Anyway, yes, for short range......up to maybe 200 yards or a bit beyond, that's all you need is a shim under one side or the other. At long range, using a shim, your bullet impact will be more to one side or the other due to the sight being out of line with the bore and front sight. As the stem on the sight goes up, you will tilt the rifle so it lines up with your eye, therefore sending the bullet off center of your intended target. That's why some long range shooters use a bubble level on their rifles and that's also why the buffalo hunters made sure they had windage adjustable sights.

This 38-55 takedown Marlin rifle wears a standard Lyman with a 47 wind gauge stem screwed in. I can take it out and just screw it in another rifle sight but this one stays set as its my 500 meter rifle that will poke holes in beer cans....if I can see the dang thing.------6

This is a rare Lyman windage adjustable sight that was only in production from 1887-1906 and is coded for Winchester rifles. The reason it was a poor seller was because the stem would not fold down for transporting and in order to make adjustments for windage, you turned that little screw on the side and the whole stem moved to one side or the other, making the bullet impact "off" at the longer distances........see the scale towards the bottom.
