De-gunked but the problem persists

Post by Winchester92 »

Thanks folks for all the good advice. I'm a beginner here and am very greatful because I don't have a good lever-gun smithy here in southern New Hampshire and I wouldn't otherwise know what to do. So here's the deal-
I have two 92s. The round barrel built in '93 works just fine. I use it to compare the action and how everything SHOULD work and feel

The octogon barrel (1902) I just bought is a bit stiff in comparison. Despite the de-gunking, the action is still rough. But that I can live with.

But when I feed a round through the loading gate, it pushes into the magazine follower as it should but then gets stuck there sitting diagonally, bullet end again the follower and head and rim of the shell againsts the loading gate. With some jiggleing I can get the round to straighten up but sometime I can't. This happened several times with both live rounds and with dummy snap caps.

I then took my other '92 and TRIED to get a round to stick like that. Won't happen. I've compare the actions of both weapons and can not see a difference that is causing this to happen. Any suggestions?

He prefers to work on 73s, but Cowboy Gun Works in Derry does great work if you decide you need a smith.

Maybe Nate Kiowa Jones will chime in.

Are you saying that it won't feed any additional shells into the magazine? Will it still cycle thru the action?

Have you run your pinky finger into the loading port, towards the follower, and swiped it around all the edges inside to feel for any burrs on the inside edge of the loading gate, loading port, magazine throat, etc ?

Griff,

When a round gets stuck, it happens when I load one. If I load more than one they all seem to feed just fine but the last one that I load gets stuck kiddy corner in the action. Wierd!!

Well I went out to the range this morning, shot 150 rounds and it only happend once! That old guns shoots good though.
