Spring stroll
The calendar may say that Spring sprung 10 days ago, but around these parts we didn't get Spring until yesterday. And then today was even nicer. I grabbed up a 25/20 and took a nice stroll in the juniper/sagebrush country on the south side of Prineville Reservoir. Here's how things looked:
. Yes, that leeetle dinky white tip in the skyline of the first picture is Mt. Hood -- only visible from here on a really clear day.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Mighty fine Earl!!!! Kirk and Nath got nothing on you. My 92 32wcf is a rifle too, they just have a look to them, long and slim.

Re: Spring stroll
Glad to entertain, levergunners. I shoulda' mentioned --- this rifle was bought new by my dad when he was about 15 years old (in the late 20's). I hadn't shot it in at least 10 years since my eyes got puny about seeing open sights. Then it occurred to me that "old Mr. Marble is still making tang sights, so what is the problem". Hence the brandy new Marbles on there and we are shootin' just fine again. 3.5 grains of Red Dot and the Lyman .258312 90 grain bullet with gas check left off. And I will confess that until I began hanging around here I had no clue that the little screw head on the upper tang was just keeping the threads clean while waiting for a tang sight to be attached.

Re: Spring stroll
I've only been to Prineville once about 15 yrs ago while attending the wedding of one of my son's friends. I went out shooting my Colt Woodsman while there and really enjoyed the day. Really interesting country and I sure liked it. Bet it's a great place to live. Thanks for the pics Earl.

Re: Spring stroll
Earlmck, love your pictures. I bought (stole) one much like yours last summer. Made a good deal on it as it had been relined, and collecter value was down. Great for me as I wanted a shooter. I posted my adventures learning to cast Lyman 257420 65 gr gas checked bullets and getting the ole girl to like them. Mine is a round barrel. Yours looks like an octagon, if I'm seeing it right. Great fun to shoot, very quiet and accurate. I just bought a Lee Shaver Hadley eye disc for my Marble tang sights. You have your choice of 10 (?) different aperature sizes to focus for varying light conditions. Works great at keeping front sight sharp for my 68 year old eyes...makes me almost dangerous..
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

A good picture gets even better when you have a good story to go with it. I love happy endings.

That is some scenic countryside, and a great levergun in the picture just takes it on to a level that few pictures ever reach. If anyone ever makes a leverguns calendar, either picture would make a great picture for April.

Re: Spring stroll
Thanks for the nice complements on the pictures, levergunners. Those were just snaps from my pocket camera taken on a bright, sunny day which is not meant for fine photography. But good old Photoshop enabled me to adjust shadows and highlights and the blue of the sky to make them into decent shots (they weren't right out of the camera).
My dad (as I recall his stories) earned the money for the rifle by peddling eggs and cheese around the Courtland (now a ghost town) and Gleason (almost a ghost town) Arizona area. And maybe his older brother had to pitch in a few bucks also to get the deal done. As I was growing up, with all my shooting done with 22 shorts 'cause they cost 45 cents vs. 55 for long rifle (as I recall) dad told me the 25/20 didn't shoot well because the barrel was worn out. Certainly the rifle had not been shot that much: dad just didn't think a kid needed to be shooting something that needed costly ammo (we didn't reload).

Wonderful pics Earl, the 1894 rifle is one of my absolute favorites.
The Courtland-Gleeson district is too
The U of A's summer geology mapping class was down there when I took it, six weeks running all over that area.

Re: Spring stroll
Earl, I obviously need to pay a whole lot more attention here. I am happy with the lush foliage of the wet side here, but miss the juniper country still. Wish I could have come along on your walk.
Re: Spring stroll
Why do guns have to be in pictures here? Your bad Earl.........you have a lever action machine gun that holds 14 rounds.
That's some nice country out there. Nothing like combing the hills with a favorite toy all by yourself. Calms the soul better than anything.----6

Re: Spring stroll
Bill, you dredged up a post from quite a while ago -- you've been off fishing and having fun I'll bet. Yes, if you'd still been in the area you'd have been most welcome to come along: I was checking on an old juniper cut Butch and I did 15 years ago that I hadn't seen since. And I don't miss that west side foliage one bit -- there's always a piece of poison oak waiting to ambush me in that stuff.Bill in Oregon wrote:Earl, I obviously need to pay a whole lot more attention here. Re: Spring stroll
Yep, this is a little unusual for this time of year. Good wet stuff and the temps been staying a little above freezing, so it melts almost as fast as it falls with no sticking to the roads.
