Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
Just got this back from the gunsmith. I've had the 1895CB for a while, but he mounted the Malcolm scope for me. Before you ask, no, I haven't shot it yet.

Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
Very cool. Keep us posted. Hope you don't get muzzle blast damage to the front end of the scope, does it actually protrude beyond the muzzle or is that just the picture?
Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
the whole assembly does protrude beyond the muzzle, but the 5-inch section past the brass fitting is just a hollow tube meant to protect the glass from muzzle blast.

Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
I had thoughts of doing that same thing a few years back when I had an overabundance of Marlin lever actions .
I think it was last year or two a guy on the cast bullet association forum took a 336CB 38-55 and did the same thing .

Josey Wales shot the guide rope off of the ferry boat with a Sharps equipped with a J. Stevens scope, a competitor of Wm Malcolm.
Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
My now deceased buddy had one of the Malcolm style scopes from the company that makes them in Idaho think he paid close to a grand for the scope anyway, on his C Sharps 45-100 it worked very nicely , I think it was a 6x .

Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
That's a good looking combination! But he should have trimmed the scope tube extension so the scope is even with the muzzle in front. Old scopes like yours is a clone of, were set up to end even with the muzzle, or slightly back. They wont get hit by muzzle blast, and they just look appropriate.

Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
No, he actually had an old Tasco reproduction scope on that Sharps in the movie. They were sold under Tasco's name, and also with NACO markings for Navy Arms Co. Navy Arms sold a bunch of them, and they were pretty decent scopes, with horrible mounts! I have a couple sets of those mounts in a junk drawer here. I like the scopes, but replace the mounts with better quality mounts. The data found online saying it was a J. Stevens brass tube scope is false. Not only did J. Stevens not get into the scope business until after 1900, but they never built their scopes with brass tubes! They purchased Cataract Optical Co. who made steel tube scopes. They continued to build the same scopes, except marking them with J. Stevens name. Fortunately whoever built up the gun and scope for the movie realized the mounts were fugly, and wrong. But they didn't realize the old scopes would never work with the long eye relief of the movie rifle/scope combo! The scope sits way too far forward to ever be able to see anything through it!Chas. wrote:Josey Wales shot the guide rope off of the ferry boat with a Sharps equipped with a J. This is one of the Tasco scopes fitted with Malcolm mounts. I antiqued the polished brass finish, to make it look era appropriate:

OK, had me wondering. Very cool setup.
Re: Marlin 1895CB with Malcolm scope
I love the look. I would be a little scared of hurting my eye brow with very stout loads , however.
Anyway , it's pretty!
