Brass Headstamp - a real stumper!

Post by JohndeFresno »

This is one that I cannot find online anywhere, despite multiple searches in "Brass Collectors" sites -
.38 Special brass, has 5 (five) stars - * * * * *

Not Star - curved line - Star as on the Starline brass, by the way; 5 stars stamped on the top, ".38 Spcl" on the bottom of the cartridge head.

Does anybody know what manufacturer uses this headstamp? For now, I have categorized this brand as "Five Star."

John,
Trying not to be the sarcastic :D *** I usually am but maybe, just maybe, it's an early variation from Starline brass. Kinda makes sense....a line of stars. Brass or nickel? Does it look old?.----6

By the way, you have too much time on your hands. I wish that's all I had to do around here. :D

LOL and now at an appointment but will photo cases when O get back!

These are once-fired brass from Diamond K, so I don't think they are that old.

I got a WHOLE bunch of those! And yep, quite a few of 'em are Peters, as well s some Federals. Just old brass. Most of mine are nickel cases. .38 Special used to be large primer.

I'll see if Diamond K folks can identify this:

I can find nothing online to indicate that Starline ever produced brass with 5 stars as a logo.

I have also contacted Starline at their website asking if they ever produced this brass.

EDIT: Hunter Pilant, Process Manager at Starline Brass, answered that it looks like Aguila made brass with that headstamp, although it is unknown who it was for. Thanks to Starline; search continues. Sent an inquiry to Aguila Ammo.

I've also got a large batch of those large primer 38s. I got them back in the late 70s when stopped at a scrap yard in south Phoenix and asked them if they had any scrap brass. We got tons of it. We were setting up ammo for practice so we could ace the quarterly qualifications.

I loaded up some just for show and they worked just fine. Another co-worker asked me why they had the big primers. In a rare spurt of creativity I said: These have big primers so you can shoot them in really loose guns, gives more for the firing pin to hit. He almost bought it too.

As for the star marked cases, I've not seen those before.

Our Starline ammo representative was correct.

I finally confirmed the origin of the headstamp, using a photo search (that led to a rather obscure entry at an International Ammunition Association (IAA) website posting:
http://iaaforum.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6359

Around 2009 or earlier, Aguila produced several pistol calibers of ammo for an unknown user with the 5-star logo:
9mm, 45 ACP, 40 SW. Then there is my .38 Special.

Mystery solved; now I can add this brass with the other Aguila brass. Or maybe I'll save the handful of rounds as a curiosity.

Wow - I missed that.

I just sent out an e-mail to them. Some folks who "sell their own ammo" don't care to divulge who actually makes it or its components for them, but I'll see if they answer. Aguila never got back to me, at least so far. Again, it may be due to their protecting their customers for whatever reason.

Thank you, Harry.

EDIT: John at Five Star Ammo sent an immediate reply - thank you, sir.
It's not theirs.
