Range Report, New Pistola

Post by mikld »

A couple weeks age I succumbed to a "I wanna be like Mike" syndrome and bought a small semi-auto 9mm. I found a good deal on a Ruger LC9s-Pro. Nice gun, easy shooting. Today is the first day dry enough to drive up in the hills.

I wasn't able to get a good grip on the gun with the "finger extension" magazine base plate, so I switched it out with the supplied plain/flat base plate. No uncomfortable recoil with 115 and 124 gr. factory loads nor handloads. Only shot the gun at 8 yds standing, two handed. Some old European mil.spec. FMJRN shot easy 4" groups, to the upper left of the POA (up 3"-4" and left 2"). Hornady 115 gr. JHPs clustered about 3 1/2"+ to left of POA but close to elevation. The best groups, slow fire, mebbe 1/2 to 1 second between shots, was with some handloads (or mebbe I was just getting used to the gun). Load was 124 gr. Hornady JHP over 4.0 gr. Universal lit off with Winchester primers. I was getting 3" groups consistently. I like the gun and will practice more with it and I'm sure groups will get better.

I reload so I pick up my brass and was lamenting the fact that I had lost about 8 new Hornady cases in the dirt. As I was wandering around looking down for brass, wishing I could find my brass, I removed my ear plugs and heard some very faint voices; far away, high pitched, faint "Save us, Help, save us". I wandered a bit south mebbe 5-6 yards, and saw some shiny 45 ACP cases. I started picking them up and quietened their fears telling them they will live again as my special reloads (I have a very nice Ruger P90 that will treat these little lost cases quite well). I had happened on a spot where some one shot up about 200 rounds of R-P 45 ACP and abandoned those little guys along with mebbe 40, 9mm mixed cases. I was able to save about 250 good cases and they will be carefully cleaned and loaded with tender loving care with some home cast 225 gr. bullets, and then fed through my P90 or 1911...

All in all, a good day...
Mike

I think the highlight of my range trips is the brass whoring!
