Looking for 50-110 W.C.F. or 50 Alaskan Loads

Post by WinFever »

I recently acquired a used Japchester mod 71 in 475 Turnbull, took the barrel off and send it to J.E.S. reboring and had him set it up for 50-110, which will enable me to shoot either round in it. I also acquired both 50 Alaskan and 50-110 Starline brass. My initial loads have been with SR4759 and IMR 4198 both now discontinued powders. Looking to duplicate some of the original loads, like the 300g 50-110 express load, and the 450g load from the 1930's, if I owned a chronograph it would be nice, I would just try and duplicate the publish velocity in the old 1930's shooter's bible. In another recent post I noticed some people are using Lil'gun in their 50 Alaskan's I would also like info on this load. Please post some loads for me.

I'm sorry, I must have missed something. Is IMR4198 really discontinued? Do I need to go make a panic buy?

I may have misspoken on IMR4198, I was told that last year by one of my suppliers, and no one had any in stock at the time, it sort of makes sense, since the same company controls both H4198 and IMR4198.

Yeah, I rushed over to the computer to see if I could find any and it seems to still be available. You had me worried there. Nice rifle BTW. I love that sight.

Here are a few I've chrony'ed through my Browning 1886 50-110 WCF 26" barrel:
57.0 grs. RL-7 and 450gr. cast bullet = 1910 fps
57.0 grs. RL-7 and 320gr. cast bullet = 1905 fps
54.0 grs. H4198 and 450gr. cast bullet = 1900 fps
54.0 grs. H4198 and 320gr. cast bullet = 1950 fps
notice the big bullet gets the same velocity as the lighter one with equal powder charges
60.0 grs. H4198 and 320gr. cast bullet = 2225 fps (equals Winchester HV load)
64.0 grs. RL-7 and 320gr. cast bullet = 2210 fps

457 thanks, that's what I'm looking for, I'm assuming all the cast bullets are wearing gas checks? My first loads with 41g of either 4759 or 4198 and Hunter Supply 420g were leaving more lead in the barrel than I liked, I plan to cast some Lee 50-70s this weekend using wheel weights. Also have some Barnes 300g coming, still looking at various mold designs for .515 or .512 Accurate molds seems to have what I'm looking for, haven't called them yet. What bullets were you using?

WinFever,
yes, the cast bullets are wearing gas checks. I'm using the Accurate 51-450C (now called the 51-440DG), Accurate 51-320E, and LBT 450gr. LFN. All diameters are .515" with the large 50 cal Gator checks on the bases. The Accurate 51-450C (now 51-440DG) was a Lever Guns member's design. I think it was Kansas Ed. I liked the way it shot and it entered the loading gate, making the bend into the magazine tube easy. Tom at Accurate graciously put the now 51-440DG nose on the 50-325G shank at my request, coming up with the 51-320E, so I could have the lighter bullet for true 50 Express loads.
