One of my old trucks -- a buddy purchased it from me recently --- he put a fine scouring pad on a DA sander and hit it to get more of the exterior finish to look like the "patina" shown on the side of the hood then clearcoated the whole shootin' match --- Looks pretty darn good

to me -- whats on top of the hood is rust - or patina gone too far --- the side of the hood and top of the fenders is "patina" - or sun fade to the less enlightened

Patina, to me is that metal that has had its protective coating, (paint or blue, etc) worn off to bare metal, but... due to cleaning, care, etc. the metal hasn't oxidized, or, begun to rust. But, I still see Chuck's point and the humor. I'll accept patina, but rust has to be removed, or access to air eliminated, for it to stop.

.

IMO,on metal (as opposed to wood), patina is stabilized rust, by whatever chain of events (purposely, low humidity, etc), similarly like bluing & browning firearm finishes ( controlled rusting).

In the military collecting world "salty" is used for just about anything with moth holes, tarnish, rips, tears, etc. "I'm selling a nice salty Nazi armband, just the way many serious collectors like it".

Light rust is "patina" but heavy pitting is generally described as "blood pitting". "Nice P38 showing blood pitting form where it was pried from a dead German officer's hand".

Creative sellers always find a way to try and pass negatives off as positives.

I agree that today it seems that it depends on whether you're buying or selling. I know patina when I see it, and to me it's always something less than rust! My old '63 Falcon has patina, as does that Rambler Griff posted. But my Falcon has no rust, or bubbles on the paint to indicate there might be rust below. Rust is NOT patina.

My dad has one of those... Except it is one of the (very few) convertibles made of that body style.
