Before and After ???

Post by Chuck 100 yd »

The BEFORE .... A piece of Bronze that came from a WWII Victory Ship that was scrapped in Vancouver WA., where it was built.
A piece of a very old Buzz Saw blade that I have had in my scrap box since the mid 70's.
Image

The AFTER .... Elk and Moose antler pieces, some leather, a lot of time, and some sandpaper later, here it is.
I seldom make a knife out of mystery metal but I sent some blades in for heat treat just before Christmas and knew there would be a long wait due to the Holidays. I do heat treat most carbon steels myself so this one got done in my shop.

That strange mark on the blade is a reflection of my camera strap. I never did say I could take good pictures. I am not Nath you know!

Time to show your projects fellas and gals.

Thanks for the compliments guys! The 3"-4" drop point blade is my favorite design and I believe just about the most useful blade there is.
I can remember when almost every hunter you ran into was carrying a big old Bowie knife just to field dress a Deer with. :?

Truth be told, I could field dress a deer with my big leatherman. The saw would be particularly handy.

Chuck, you do some really nice knife work. I like your handle also. It's hard for me to find good antler for handles. Seems like I can look at a hundred pieces and find only a couple good ones.

BC in TN , it is just a hobby friend. Making for sale makes it a job for me and the fun goes away.
I try to make the one I am making better than the last one. That means I end up with a lot of hours into them. Knife making is a tough business to be in unless you have a famous name and people are willing to pay. There are knife makers that are so far behind they just quit taking orders for knives that sell well north of $ 1K. Take a look at Walter Sorrells web site. Thanks for asking though.
