help me make an id
The game cam pic was took Nov 3 2015
Killed this deer this evening
Shoot him with my M77 30 06 150 grain corelok
But someone had a sorry shot with a bow sometime earlier, maybe a month, I don't know
But what makes me sick, if you'll notice on the arrow shaft the white stuff is actually green, I was afraid to keep the meat, it was not a dark red like it's suppose to be, it was a pale pink, and stunk very bad, I don't believe anyone here will hold it against me, but I did away with it
There was about a pint of this puss in the cavity, the arrow was under the backstrap between the last two ribs, couldn't pull it out so I shofed it out the bullit hole
My question is do you think it's the same deer as in the game cam pic, I dont think it the same one myself
BY NO MEANS AM I FUSSING ABOUT BOW HUNTERS
It just wrecked me to have to throw him away

Oh, I didn't get a pic of the spot on his hind qtr, but looked like coyotes had almost caught him at one point

What a shame!! Sure can't blame you for throwing it a way, makes you wonder how hard they tried to find it.

Re: help me make an id
I would say no on the same deer, although it does look close ??
don't blame you for not using the buck!!
on the bad shot with the bow, it surely can happen no matter what you use
you did the deer right

Looks like the same deer to me. Take comfort that you ended a beast's suffering. Something will eat it
Re: help me make an id
I always finish off wounded deer when I see them . No need to suffer.
I shot a buck a few years ago that was hit by a car. The back leg was broken. When I cut it open it stunk real bad. Coyotes had lunch on that one.
Not worth getting sick over.

I've had to throw away a few, maybe 4 deer in my life. A couple were from bad bow shots. Can't be helped. You did the right thing. Don't waste a tag on such. You're just cleaning up after someone.

.
You've done well, putting down that animal.
IME, oftimes a light rib hit, or an arrow that hits bone, won't leave enough of a trail for tracking it down.

The jerk that attempted to kill that deer with that shot angle needs a beat down, and a lesson in archery hunting.
You did the right thing, and no one would blame you for not trying to eat any of that meat.

Thanks fellers for all the replies
Re: help me make an id
Hmmm. If it was a high broadside hit, I could give them the benefit of the doubt, but I can't imagine any scenario that a deer would move to this angle so quickly that the shooter couldn't give pause and wait for a proper shot opportunity.Nath wrote:It may of jumped the string or turned Ted!TedH wrote:It looks like the same deer to me.

Re: help me make an id
I think you did the deer a service. It was suffering a slow, painful death. Most states would not require you to use your tag, for doing this, if you contacted the fish and game dept. I had a similar incident, and saw a deer struggling along during rifle season. It had an arrow stuck in him, which would have happened about 5-6 weeks earlier. I put him down with a shot, and after checking the arrow wound, I also felt he was infected. I went to the closest F&G office and reported it. I was asked if I put my tag on it, and I confirmed I had. They asked where it was, and I showed them the buck in my truck bed. They took it, and issued me a replacement tag.

Good job putting the deer down. I had one on camera at the beginning of the month with what looked like a broken jaw. I would put it down if I seen it while I had a gun. Like everyone said, don't blame you for not eating. I put out neck and rib cages for the bobcats and coyotes with the camera watching. The person that shot the deer with the arrow may have hit a branch that they didn't see. I gut shot a doe last year with my daughters cross bow. Couldn't figure it out until I walked the path of the arrow and seen a little sapling the arrow bounced off. Found her the next morning but the coyotes had got to her first. Don't know if it's the same buck or not. Brow tines don't look the same but could just be the grainy photo.

Re: help me make an id
Got a call today from a friend thats got a place bout 3 miles from me, he works with my son is how he found out bout this
His nephew stuck this buck around Nov 13ish, don't know how old the nephew is, anyway he recognised the deer, arrow, fletchin, broadhead, and lighted nock, said he had thought he shot to high and missed, then seen the lighted nock go out of sight, they searched 2 days, then kept lookin for buzzards for days, it made him sick as it did me
Something else, this morning I walked pass the deers head, I had it hanging from a limb, I saw a big ol worm hanging out of a nostril, asked around and its called nasal bots, big as a big grub worm, seems I remember learning of these years ago
Are the bots common?
