.458 American
Does anyone have any handloading data for the 458 American cartridge? I've found very little information on the internet. It's very similar to the 450 Marlin. The case is 1/10" of an inch shorter. I suppose I could use the 450 Marlin as a guide but thought I would pick the collective brains here first. Specifically I'm interested in 300 and 350 grain spritzer bullets. The rifle I've got is a side lever Mauser.

It's been a while, but I "think" it was featured in cartridges of the world.
Also, have you tried to google it?
Many times that has worked for me.

Yeah......I Googled it but about all I came up with was a history of the cartridge and one sight that had what looked to be a rather mild load of 23 to 25 grains of IMR 4198 for a 300 gr. bullet. The Speer manual #14 lists a load of 46 to 50 gr. of the same powder for a 300 gr. bullet in the 450 Marlin. I'm thinking that I could drop back to 42 gr. of that powder to start and see about pressure signs there.

LoadData.com, an inexpensive subscription site, shows several loads from Rifle Issue 140 (1969).
Then, there is this from Reloader's Nest:

You are very welcome. Careful - at least two of those listings appear to be max loads. What is your barrel length?Lassiter wrote:Thank you, Sir! That is a lot of help!
QuickLoad shows the cartridge, so I can send you a little extra help.

AmmoGuide.com shows loads for it, ranging from 2463 ft-lbs with a 350 grain bullet to 4005 ft-lbs with a 405 bullet...
