Good read & cant argue with none of it
357 & 30-30 are well used with me, 357 is a lot easier to burn up 100 rounds

Good article on two of my favorite carbines. I have a 5D on my Rossi .357 and a Marbles tang sight on my 1951 94 30-30.

I have a great AR-15 that my grandson Scrateshooter from Texas built and gave to me a couple of years a go. BUT, he knows that if something bad happens I will probably grab a lever gun first.

Remember Bestlever? He had a 30 WCF AI, and warmly loaded 130 grain pointy bullets. It was a two shot, of course, but he claimed some amazing ballistics for it, upwards of 2750 fps, IIRC.....His son had it, and called it the death laser.

Am always surprised folks that write about the 30-30 rarely mention 125 grain bullets. They kill like lightening for me and recoil is like a mothers kiss. What more could you want? Been using the cartridge since I was a kid :D Deer, turkeys, pigs...

Also kinda negates the need to a want for the 25-35 win.
But will pretend I didn't mention that.

Heh, have a Marlin 1893 saddle ring carbine with tang peep headed this way on Saturday, in .30 WCF. Will report.
My late good friend Arthur "The Dread" Wechlo was particularly fond of cast in his .30-30s.

I love this 1951 '94. I've always used 170gr "any" factory in it.
This was shooting it at 75(?) yards off my rolled up coat. The shots are numbered. Iron sights, of course.

I really like the 30-30 and I've read that article before, but I transitioned over to a Marlin 1894C and a Rossi R92 in .357 Mag because I only Mule deer hunt 10 days out of the year and shoot the .357 Mag in a rifle more. I also use the .357 mag for smaller stuff. Plus I find the .357 mag more versatile (.38spl) and cheaper to reload, just my opinion.

Good point, 30/30 can be loaded pretty cheap too.
Nothing wrong with 357 though :)

Well cs, I picked one up for $650 so you only knocked about $2600 off the value.

I just finished reading the cast bullet article that "Bill in Oregon" is sending out. And of course it fits in perfectly with this "30-30 Rules" thread. Although since Frank Marshall is recommending a cast bullet of 185 - 190 grains at 1900 fps maybe he is really contributing to a "303 Savage Rules" thread

My contribution -- here is a pic of my all-time favorite rifle: a 1950 Marlin 336-A
336A30WCF.jpg
And here is a little Factory Load porn: (price tag showing for your amusement)
Win3030a.jpg
And my new favorite plinking load: Ranch Dog 32/20 bullet sized on down to .309 so it'll fit the throat of the 30/30 Marlin pushed by 10 grains of Green Dot for about 1700 fps
Win3030b.jpg
And I use that exact same load in the 30 Rem and the 303 Savage. A very "kid friendly" fun load.
