Hunting Truck...

Post by Old Ironsights »

Well, finally got a Winter Rig. The Bike's still my summer Go-To, but once the Wyoming Weather turns... and I have to haul (cervid) Bodies around... doesn't work so good.

I'm both Poor and Cheap, so I was trying to find something that would let me commute to work in a manner roughly equivalent to my Bike, but still keep the frost bite and icy road rash at bay.

Enter the Kei Truck.

I wanted to buy the broken one that has been parked out back of Work, but my boss makes Ebeneezer Scrooge look like a spendthrift. He simply wouldn't sell it to me.

So... I bought this one.

Image

'94 Dihatsu (Toyota) HiJet. 4wd, 660cc, heated, 30-40mpg depending, etc.

Was delivered today.

Interesting experience. Been a long time since I’ve driven a Right Hand Drive/left hand shift vehicle (England, 1989/1990). But, it came right back. Kind of fun.

It’s definitely Japanese. If I was any bigger I wouldn’t be able to drive it. 5'10" and too much leg but no leg adjustments. (Sorry Blaine, you have to ride in the back...  )

But it seems to work well enough. 660cc engine has almost silent idle (good for hunting). Run it much over 90kmph and it gets noisy/shaky, but that was a given. Speedo/odo are only in km, so I’ve got to remember my rough conversions: 40kph = 25mph, 50kph = 31mph, 70kphm = 43mph, 90kph = 55mph… gotta keep the city cops at bay...

4wd is push-button instant on. Manual High & low range. Works great on ice.

Super basic rig. No dome lights (fortunately I have some LEDs to add) and the AM-only radio is tuned to Japanese frequency skips, so everything is .3 or so out of tune. Oh well. Figured I’d have to replace that anyway. Not important now.

Seems to heat up OK. Be interesting to see how it defrosts.

Me likey so far... (yes, it's street legal here. Only Interstates are off limits, and that is negotiable. (not that there are any near me).)

Been a long time since I’ve driven a Right Hand Drive/left hand shift vehicle

Never had the opportunity. Did have the chance with my old company to go to Osaka (I could have seen your truck there!) and work on the data networking at our airport facility.

Osaka is +13 hr time change. Got off the plane after almost 24 hr trip, went to work. Figured out my wiring issues, got the network link up. Since it was almost midnight local, no train or bus service so one of our office reps drove me back to hotel. Of course, I was sitting on the left hand side where normally the steering wheel is and little bits of my exhausted mind was screaming in terror as he went hauling down the expressway.

For a knock-about vehicle, that is very neat. Pls post some more pictures and discuss pricing.

Probably Cheat Grass/OD after a 2" lift and some more aggressive tyres.

What I want to do first is mount a rear window gun rack... Where I can hang my spare/cheap Katana...

OI, I like your choice. It's worlds more practical than all the expensive SXS ATVs I see being dragged on a flatbed trailer past my place to run the logging roads. I've had the pleasure of riding in a couple. In the summer the dust boils in behind the windshield covering you and your gear with a thick layer. Don't know about winter/fall..heater? Rain and snow? I'll take my 89 YJ Wrangler with a four banger and a five speed. Soft top and sliding glass side windows keep the rain out and the heat in. The grouse do hate it though..Image

I really considered a CJ, but between the initial cost, the plate fees, the insurance, the MPG, and the fact that I would STILL be buying someone else's problems/rock crawler, I opted against.

A CJ also doesn't have a 900lb bed capacity.

Ended up costing right at $5200 delivered. If you live reasonably close to a Port, you can get them about $1000 cheaper.

In the end, I'm hoping to get close to this with mine:

I hear you about the payload..had a deuce of a time getting a big whitetail doe to the house with the Wrangler. I also had a hard time finding one that hadn't been "child owned". Lifted till the drive lines won't work, tires so big they now need a V8, now too much power for the differentials, so need new heavy duty front and rear ends, kids ruin more Jeeps and the speed shops just love it! Was amazed to find the one I did untouched by testosterone fueled idiots.. I found mine untouched and straight for 3K.

There was (is?) a nice looking CJ on Craigslist over in then Twin Falls area that didn't look too bad, but still...

The Plate and Insurance fees alone save me $1000+/yr, never mind 30-40mpg...

Bet you could order one direct and get it dropped off in Port pretty danged cheap...

The 1990 variants are a particularly good deal right now.

That, and carrying capacity, is their prime benefits.

Downside(s)?

If you are much over 5'10" &/or... Round... You ain't gonna fit behind the wheel...

Too bad for you... You need more Oriental Genes. ;)

There are some companies that tweak extended cab versions, but I don't think that will help...

my friend has one in the Shreveport,Louisiana area. It took a couple of years after he bought it before LA made it legal to have a road use title. It took a Louisiana state politician to buy one to get the law passed. By then he did not need it any more. He still has in the back yard. He is about 6'3". Says it ain't too bad to ride in.
It is also white in color. Mitsubishi I believe is the brand.
