browning M 71 front sight?

Post by FOTIS »

I have a browning 71 in 348 Winchester. I found a load that is deadly accurate but my rear peep (Williams) can NOT go low enough so the load shoots high. Can someone tell me what the factory front sight height is so I can buy a taller one? Here is a picture of my setup.

Sweet looking 71 you have there.
What length barrel? What type brand of sight do you anticipate on purchasing? I can get a measurement off mine.
What good load did you find, and how is accuracy?

0.370''..maybe 5 to 6 thou less.
This is measured from the bottom of the dovetail to the center of the sight, and does not include the ramp beneath it. Barrel is 24''.

24" barrel.

My load is the hornady 200 grain with h4350.

I was thinking of getting one of these to replace the front factory sight

Actually did not help since I have a receiver peep sight :(

Is middle of bead to bottom of dovetail the industry standard for measuring sights

So in the following image we measure the gold part only right?

FOTIS,
It is common to use that method of measuring, but is not the only method used. I would check with the sight manufacturer.
Yes, the gold part is measured.

Lyman used to use a formula where if your rifle six inches low at say 50 yards with the sight set in the lowest setting. You would divide your sight radius Ex 28.5 inches into the inches at 50 yards 50X36= 1800 / 28.5=63.16. Now you are 6 inches low so 6/63.16=.095 higher sight at least.
Of course if you want to have it shoot to point of aim with the sight set in the middle adjustment and you are changing to 75 0r 100 yards you would need to change you numbers.
