Blessing #2 - Got a Deer!

Post by Old No7 »

Less than 24 hours from getting the call about a new job, I was out in the woods at dawn's early light and...

Blessing #2 = I got a deer!

Just after 7AM, about 110 yards out across a dry swamp/swale, I spotted what I thought was a doe walking along the treeline heading towards the grassy edge of the larger wet swamp. I had time to slowly get into a solid position and crank the 2-7X scope up to 5X. Then one shot with my Model 70 in 6.5x55 Swedish (using a 129 gr Hornady spire point handload) did the job. (If it had been raining, I probably would have had my Savage 99 Levergun, but oh well...)

Turns out it was a little "button buck" and his knubs were about the size of my thumbs. Having an Anterless Deer Permit for my zone in my pocket, I didn't have to struggle with the "Small buck or doe?" question at all. I was hunting for meat, not antlers, and there was a deer. And here he is...

My shot went a little higher than I wanted, taking out the spine (and a couple of chops... :?), but we'll have some fine meals out of him. It's not too gruesome, but the exit hole was a whole lot bigger than 6.5 millimeters!

After those 2 special Blessings in 24 hours, my wife said "Now you need to play the lottery..."

So now I am just waiting on the news of my $60,000,000.00 jackpot!

Good huntin'.

Cool !

Of all the 6.5mm's I've fooled with I've never taken a deer with a 6.5x55 .

Did you use handloads or factory ?

I've got a new to me Remington Model 7 in 260 REM like the one I had before . I used the Nosler 125 Partition in the earlier one but am setup with the Hornady 123 SST in this new to me 260.
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

That was one of my handloads.

My Swede does really well (honest <1" 5-shot groups at 100 yards off the bench, if I do my part well) with Hornady's 129 gr Spire Point, seated over 45.5 gr of H4350 with a fairly snug Lee Factory Crimp. I use Lee Collet/Neck Dies when loading brass for the same rifle (all sorted by assigned lot numbers), and then I will only use the full-length dies every 5 or so loadings.

The 129s do much better in my Swede's (the other is a 1943 original m/38b Swedish Mauser) than the "standard" 140s.

Tight groups.
