Old Winchesters in obsolete calibers are very interesting to me and I especially enjoy seeing someone actually use them as intended. That's a dandy buck. He would make two of the size we have around here!

it appears that winchester sold a different gun for each bullet weight/diameter combination. smart for a gun maker, eh? just don't tell anyone about changing bullet weights in the same gun . . . shhhhhhh.

Thank you for posting the fine picture ! May your life be blessed with many more fine hunting days with that rifle. Being able to walk around free with a rifle full of history and use it to harvest a healthy critter is one of those good moments.
When you get a chance fill in a few details.. Load, details of the day, even where you found that nice Winchester.

I have an addiction to Winchesters. I just got a sightless pre-64 model 70 featherweight in mint condition. I had both of them with me this weekend and I had 2 deer tags and wanted to shoot a buck with the 270 and a doe with the 40-72. When I saw the buck, I knew it was no trophy, but figured the trophy would be in the shot and the rifle. My brother ranged it at 162 yards and I adjusted the peep sight accordingly and shot him.

Tonight I took the model 70 out and shot the doe. It worked, but the real prize is getting to use such a historic gun as the 1895, in a rare chambering. Most 1895's were sent to Russia and the rest were divided between the rest of the cartridges of which the 40-72 is one of the rarest...

The article that Mike Venturino wrote on the 1895 Winchesters was on his 405 and my 40-72. He compared the 2 as old and not as old, 40 calibers and the similarities and differences. We found out in doing the comparison, that the rim thickness of the 405 is about .017" thicker than the 40-72 which keeps the 405 from chambering in the 40-72 and potentially blowing up the gun with the higher pressures in the 405 cartridge...
