Went on a bit of a round about today. Had to take my father to the VA in Sioux Falls for a checkup. Not much to see down there for leverguns. I was kinda poking around for a Savage 99 (for the wife of course
). I did see a fairly nice takedown in 303 in Cabella's for way too much money. Gary's had a Springfield Loaded 5" in 45acp for a very good price. Cabella's was closing out handy rifles with some good pricing, if they'd had one in 223, I'd probably have bit. Cabella's also had an old stevens 32SP leveraction. Didn't look at the price. Haven't seen one of those in a decade or two. They had a presaftey Marlin 1894 in 44mag., the price was almost $500 so I didn't dicker on it either.

Actually the Sportsman's Warehouse in SF had a good selection of leverguns, all new, of course, they don't take trades. They always have a good selection. Coonfingered a Taylor Sharps in 45-70. They aren't a Shilo or even a Pedersoli but it didn't seem a bad rifle. They had all the current Marlin Cowboys. Handled a 45-70 one of those for the first time. I was surprised how light it felt compared to my old 93 Marlin 38-55 with it's octagon barrel. It's officially on my "be nice to have" list now. I usually stew for a year or so after that happens to make sure it's real, but if it holds up I'll just have to get one.
Gary's also had one of the new John Wayne winchester 92s and a new Winchester 45-70 1886 takedown. Purdy, but out of my price range on either. Gary's will deal but they have a lot of overhead that small dealers don't have. I went to high school with the "Gary" that started the store. When I dealt with him, I always thought I was treated fairly. The new owners haven't given me any reason to dislike the store. Scheels I don't even bother with anymore except for some loading supplies. They are sometimes better than Gary's on those. SWH is right there with Scheels on prices.
It's probably a good thing I didn't know my IRS refund hit the bank today or that Springfield at Gary's might have followed me home. After I got home, I put a bid on a 300sav 99 in an online auction for the wife when I found out. I hesitated a year ago when I was selling excess dies on ebay about the 300 dies, then went ahead. I got to start listening to those little voices.
Dad's doing well, all things considered. It was just a checkup.

You were almost in my backyard. I live halfway between Beresford and Vermillion. There is a small shop or two in Lennox and Dakota Archery in Yankton has a nice selection if you want to go a little out of your way on the way home next time. Also a nice looking shop by Dell Rapids that I've never been to but looks good in their ads. I shop at Scheels a lot but buy very little. Their powder is cheaper than Sportsmans and once in a while they have good deals on guns. Give a shout next time you're in the area and I'll buy you a cup of coffee.
I am King of my castle; I do whatever I want, whenever I want to, ...... as long as my wife says it's OK.
