What is the general opinion on shooting anniversary editions

Post by jfg_4 »

What is the general opinion on shooting anniversary editions?

I have a Winchester 1894 1976 bicentennial edition. It is an unfired specimen that I picked up for about the same price as a normal 1894.

I would hate to be the one to depreciate this thing- but I kind of would like to shoot it.

What say ye?

They were made to be collectible. Anything made just for collecting does not interest a true collector.
Shoot it and enjoy.

If it's value is similar to a regular 94 now, it's not going to appreciate to an extremely high value in your lifetime anyway.
Shoot it, I say! And post some pictures! :)

I guess with a limited edition run of 20,000 I will shoot it :)

I'll get some better pictures but she is in the lower right with the coin in the stock.

Have you got all the stuff that goes with it?? i.e. box, papers, rack. If you do you might want to think twice about shooting it. I had one complete and put it on a local gun auction a couple years ago and got $865.00 out of it. You can buy a pretty nice 94 shooter for that kind of money and have some left. :D If you don't have it all, let'er fly.

I have one also. With the box, the sleeve, the wrapper and the shipping box... all the tags and labels. It's still unfired. Now I have 3 other commemorative Winchester 94s... none of which have that stuff... they've all been fired.

If you have a truly limited production model, it maybe worth while not to shoot it. However not much is keeping up with inflation these days, so you may as well get the enjoyment out of shooting it.
Some of the best shooting 94's are the octagonal barreled anniversary rifles. Few years back they were going for a song. Best bang for the buck, and maybe still. I have not looked recently.

Some of those Winchester commemoratives had production numbers of over 50,000 guns. So with all those collectibles I would definitely shoot one if it were mine.

I bought a used, like new, Win. Legendary Frontiersmen in 38-55 that I fired the day it arrived here. I have retired it from shooting silhouette but just might take it to a match next spring as I believe it needs to be fired again.

Depends on the model....and it must be brand new in the box, with papers and everything in near mint condition.
Otherwise its a shooter...and just because you shoot it....that does not really mean you ruin the value.
Yours is one of the nicer models....I would not shoot the John Waynes, 94 centennials, 9422s.
There are so many....Check out the list...

I have and have had several commemorative Winchesters over the years and shot them all. If you don't shoot them, they are just for lookin' at. If looking is all I intend to do, a picture of one would suffice! :D

I have owned 4 various commemorative guns through the years. The first one I bought new was a Texas Ranger S&W with the knife back in the 1970`s when it first came out. I never shot it and sold it later for quite a bit. I bought three more various commemorative`s used/new through the years because they were cheap. I still have two I never shot but that is because I have similar standard models that I do shoot. These are the two I still have. I hope to sell these someday when my IRA get`s low or I am closer to counting my chips. One is a Uberti made for the American Historical Fondation General George S. Patton Silver Plated fully engraved clone .45 Colt and the other is a S&W model 544 5" 44/40 Texas Wagon Trail. Both I bought used but new. No PW on the Patton, the smith has no PW but did come with the wood case. The third picture is the S&W Texas Ranger I used to own.

One of my hunting buddies bought a Theodore Roosevelt model 94 with long barrel and abbreviated magazine. It looks just like a model 64 Winchester. He had the chamber reamer to PO Ackley Improved and mounted a Williams receiver sight. This rifle shoots amazing velocity while producing impressive accuracy. This commemorative rifle is a hunter!

I have 3 Colt 125th Anniversary SAAs that I shoot. I bought them because they are much cheaper than a standard blue/CC. A brace of them I had fully engraved and the gold plated off and added ivory grips. I've shot several SASS matches with them. These guns are 2nd gen.

The 3rd one I have has a Colt Frontier Six Shooter barrel and a 2nd generation cylinder that has been rechambered to 44-40. I paired it up with a 3rd generation from the Colt custom shop that is full blue with ivory. I just shot the Missouri Triple Crown last week in the FC Elder Statesman category. Well, I shot the regional black powder match and the Missouri State Champion match with them. The third match was a Wild Bunch Championship.

As you can see I'm the camp that says "Shoot It!"

I only have one right now, a Winchester 94 '66 Commerative with the gold (yellow) plated receiver. I shoot it, a lot, and even drilled it for a tang sight. I won't own a gun I don't shoot. If it's about an investment, there's plenty of other places to put that money that will do much better for me.

Of the Winchester mdl 94 Commemoratives, only the John Wayne has seen some appreciable escalation... and even those haven't outstripped inflation. I've seen a few sets, when the entire kit & caboodle was included, come mighty close.
