Wow! That one is just waaay to purty, Bill. Yep, crawling around through some thorny bushes might be just the thing to give your new baby some badly needed "character" dings and scratches.

Nice find Bill....!!
I agree....that pretty wood needs the kind of character one only gets by carrying through the bush for a couple of weeks.
What loads are you going to be working on...????

Earl, the thought of adding dings and scratches, although inevitable, gives me the heebie-jeebies.
On another forum, I scored a set of Herter dies, 100 virgin WW cases, a box of Winchester factory 200s, two boxes of Hornady 200-grain bullets and a box of 200-grain Silvertips. Can't wait for it all to arrive.
Pete, this is one of those rifles that makes a feller want to go hunting wearing a red-plaid Filson mackinaw and a Stetson hat.

Yep - The Maine state record Whitetail (455 lbs, dressed, IIRC) was taken (mid-state) about 40 years ago, with a .348 Model 71.

Saw specs on Buffalo Bore ammo with a 250gr bullet at 2300fps. That ought to pack a whallop.

Your model 71 sure is a beauty! Nice find.handirifle wrote:Saw specs on Buffalo Bore ammo with a 250gr bullet at 2300fps. That ought to pack a whallop.
I always assumed that the .348 was more powerful than the 35 Whelen but seeing this Buffalo bore load above gives me new respect for the Whelen.
A standard Whelen load is 250 grains @ 2700 fps. Now where can I find a model 95 in 35 Whelen?

Re: A blind hog finds a .348
Greetings
That is a nice model 71 ! But like a new car or motorcycle.. if a scratch is the worry then get it over with. Then you can truly enjoy packing it around. But do enjoy that rifle. Have a 33 Winchester TD (1922) that is not quit a caliber .348 but sure is far more than a 30-30. They are fine medium game rifles in every aspect and shout to be taken out and hunted with.

Easy way is to get a 95 in 06 and send it to JES Reboring. In 3-4 weeks back comes your 35 Whelen that is one humdinger of a lever rifle.
I have an older Model 95 in30 US (30-40) that will be headed out next time up to become a 375-30 US. Not quit the 375 Whelen (have one) but it will still throw 275 grainers at 2200fps which is about all I do with my cast bullets.

Re: A blind hog finds a .348
Yep. That's what I did. Browning 1895s are reasonable (800 to 1000 on a regular basis, sometimes cheaper) and the reboring is $225 including return shipping. Didn't take long, either. I love it.missionary5155 wrote:GreetingsJi in Hawaii wrote:Your model 71 sure is a beauty! Nice find.handirifle wrote:Saw specs on Buffalo Bore ammo with a 250gr bullet at 2300fps. Bill...get that rifle in the woods ASAP....and get it over with..!!Bill in Oregon wrote:Earl, the thought of adding dings and scratches, although inevitable, gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Let me share 2 quick stories on that topic, if I may:
One is about a buddy of mine who always prided himself on the beauty of his rifles and shotguns...Gorgeous wood, tasteful..well executed engraving, etc. He accompanied me once on a trip to Africa. He took a gorgeous Weatherby to do most of his hunting with. When he got that rifle home...well, it was pretty "marked up"...and my friend was more proud of THAT one, than anything he had in his glass display cases.
The other story is about another close friend who stumbled on a New-in-Box, unfired Browning M-71.
Being a levergun fan...he snapped it up. Unfortunately..for the next year and a half...he agonized over that rifle..whether to shoot it, or keep it NIB. Eventually...unable to do ANYTHING with his prize for fretting over "value"...he traded it off.
Your rifle...your choice.

This really has me thinking. A Model 95 in .338/06 would be so cool.missionary5155 wrote:GreetingsJi in Hawaii wrote:Your model 71 sure is a beauty! Nice find.handirifle wrote:Saw specs on Buffalo Bore ammo with a 250gr bullet at 2300fps. That ought to pack a whallop.

Jess offers that! I asked about having a 95 converted to 8mm-'06 but he can't do the bore that small. But he does re-bore to .338DiamondD wrote:
