Wyoming Antelope
Shot this loper in Wyoming this week. Used the bolt action Sako .243, only thing wrong with the whole trip. Not that it isn't a great gun, but after hunting them out here, would like a Savage 99 in 300 or 250-300 or 284win even. Long shots, quick follow up would be handy, and once as my brother was putting stalk on a buck, another buck came screaming down from over a hill at us, slammed on the breaks when he saw us, about 60 yards out, brother couldn't get clumsy heavy bolt 308 rem varmint rifle into battery quick enough to shoot that nice buck. An old fashioned lever and he would have shot it right there, 60 yards.
So, will have to think about antelope type cartridges in lever guns in future. Like thought of BLR in 257 Roberts also.

Re: Wyoming Antelope
Nice goat for sure.
Don't overlook the 308MX or XLR. I shot a nice buck in South Dakota a few years back at 293 yards off the top of a fence post, dropped in his tracks. Followed up the buck with two "does of good opportunity" with the same gun, off-hand at 87 yards, then another at 340 yards. Nice when they go to a lever for sure.

Re: Wyoming Antelope
Yes, thought about the 308MX, have a BLR in 308, should have kept my old win 307.
243 did its job and wasn't worried about it. Shot the Federal load with sierra gameking bullet, went through both front shoulders at 181 yards. Dropped in its tracks, dead before I got up to him.
Story about my brother, was shooting Hornady Light mag loads, 165gr 308. Missed three, yes three antelopes. Went to local range that afternoon, he couldn't group those bullets at 100 yards inside a cantaloupe, let alone an antelope.
Bought some Federal 308, with the sierra game king, at 100yds, bullets could be covered with a nickel shooting off a back pack.
He learned a lesson. Different ammo/bullets etc shoot differently out of same gun. He didn't miss the fourth, 150 yard heart shot.
Marinated the tenderloins with Worcestershire, and grilled the next evening, good stuff.

Re: Wyoming Antelope
BLR comes in 243. There is one in my safe and one of the Grandsons has one. They shoot real good too.

Nice.
Bigger than mine, but I had a whopping 5 hours to work with.
Savage 99c in .308 works just fine.

Argh. Quit posting these pictures I haven't been able to get a pronghorn tag for 2 or 3 seasons....
My last one was shot with a Winchester 1895 deluxe in .30-'06 (modern Miroku) Come to think of if, my last mule deer was taken with an 1895 Browning in .35 Whelen.
Still trying to decide what to use on mule deer this year. Marlin in ,32 Special, Marlin in .444, Browning SRC, or Granpa's ca 1906 1894 in .30 WCF.

Re: Wyoming Antelope
I used a Sako (old model with Bofors steel barrel) Forester bolt action.
Federal sierra game king 100gr. Dropped in his tracks, dead when I walked up to him. 181 yards.
I would use the 32 special on the Mule deer vanclew, but then I am a bit biased.

I gotta quit buying rifles faster than I can hunt with them.
