I got out my Browning/Miroku 1886 to shoot a CAS side match and noticed an odd fault. The action is very hard to close on a round for the last bit of bolt travel, before the locking bars rise up. With no shell it cycles fine but even with a fired case the action will only close if I slam the lever hard. It seems that the ejector is reluctant to move back as the bolt closes but when the bolt opens it ejects fine. Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated.

Browning 1886 problem

Re: Browning 1886 problem
Sounds like the ejector and spring needs to be removed and examined. The springs do occasionally fail and bind the ejector.
Kind regards,

There could also be a little built-up crud in there.

Especially if you've been shooting mostly BP. Unless you find something else when you begin to take it down... you may find some wear on the ejector, spring and/or collar which may be causing them to get out of alignment, making the ejector hard to collapse back into the bolt.Pete44ru wrote:.

Re: Browning 1886 problem
If it seems to work without a round but stiffens with a round that would indicate a too stiff extractor climbing over the rim. With the ejector you generally feel it collapsing into the bolt with or without a round.

Re: Browning 1886 problem
I'm guessing the angled end of the extractor is rough, or at the wrong angle, or even rusted in its groove in the bolt..

Re: Browning 1886 problem
Thanks for the advice. I can push the ejector back into the bolt but the extractor is very hard to move. Looks like I will have to dismantle it. I've stripped and reassembled an original Winchester 1886 before and am hoping the Browning is similar.

Re: Browning 1886 problem
The extractor is very stiff no matter what. As was mentioned, check for roughness on its face where it rides/snaps over the rim on the last bit of chambering.
Working some solvent into it and working it with an empty shell may help de-crud/rust it if its hanging up in the bolt.
