Added to the Collection

Post by Shasta »

I made my regular Friday visit to a local pawn shop that stocks a whole bunch of guns. They were very busy as usual, but the guys always acknowledge a regular customer. The owner says "Whatcha buyin' today?" I told him nothing if I could help it. He says "I got something in back you might like. It's going in the sales rack tomorrow; one of those newer Winchester 1886 takedown models."
Well, I figure I am off the hook, as I already have one of those, and I told him as much. Told him how much I liked it and all, but I just wish it was the fancy one with high grade wood and checkering. Right about then he sets the hook...
"This one is the fancy checkered model. It's a trade-in, but was never fired. You wanna see it?"

Is a four-pound Robin fat? Of course I want to see it! Sure enough, it's just what I like with fancy wood, crescent buttplate, checkering, and a takedown to boot! It was reasonably priced at $1,495, and I hated to hand it back to him. I said I'd have to think on it and talk to the wife. I drove the two miles home, whined to the wife how I just had to have it, I know they will cut me a better deal, dear, and lucky me, she gives the OK! I was back at the shop within a half hour and got it for $1,400 out the door. Of course, this being California, I have to wait ten days to really take it out the door, so no pictures yet.

I do have a picture of a fun little project I got not long ago that will keep me busy for awhile. Guns are not my only vice.......

That's to keep everyone safe, because them leverguns are 'high-capacity' rifles and you're probably a desperado...

They didn't. Solid colors only and regular hood. It's likely either a 327 or 350. Although they may, haven't seen one yet, made a few 307's.

pshort, No waiting period on cars in California; heck, you don't even have to have a license, just bring money!

Griff, the Camaro was originally a plain 327 two barrel with Powerglide. The cowl induction hood and rally stripes were added to make it go faster!

It has only 96,600 original miles, but since the motor smokes and the tranny slips severely, it will soon be fitted with a 300+ h.p. 350 c.i. and a Turbo 350 transmission. The ugly deep dish wheels will be replaced with some old style 5 spoke Torque Thrust. I may not be much on the rifle range, but I'll look good gettin' there! :D

ImageImageSomehow, I knew those wheels were slated to be replaced!! You'd be VERY happy w/a 700R4... I am w/mine, 4.11 @ 70 = ~2600rpm vs 3700 w/ direct as final trans gear.

You should reconsider and go the levergun.com route and shoe horn a 502 ci into the front of that thing. Hey, oil prices are going down right?

Got the rifle and here are the pictures:

As you can see, it is a fine looking rifle. I took it to the range to see how it would shoot with some of my 300 grain cast lead loads. Herer are the first five shots at 50 meters:

Image

After adjusting the rear sight I put five shots from the bench onto the 100 meter Pig silhouette target:

Image

I was pleased with the rifle's accuracy, but unfortunately like most of the new Winchesters with the tang safety-rebounding hammer mess, it would give a light hammer strike and misfire at least once in every five shots. A second cock of the hammer would fire the round, but misfires are unacceptable. My other '86 was the same way until I disabled the rebound spring, so this one will get the same treatment.

Griff, I didn't wait an extra minute to pick it up, I was there right on the dot. The delay for pictures and firing it was because I had cataract surgery on my shootin' eye. Just got the other eye done this morning.

Sounds like a plan, Griff! I'd love to meet you and spend some time shooting. I'll even bring along my late brother's 2 bore flintlock just in case you have shooting something like that on your bucket list!
