Went Cowboy Action Shooting Today
Now that the sweat has dried, and the guns are cleaned, maybe my thoughts on today's adventure are a little better organized.
While others were blazing away at targets that ranged between 12 & 50 feet away, I picked at the corners... On the cowboy shaped targets, their hats were devoid of lead smears before I started... not so after I was done! Those little cutout targets are one of the most oft complained about things in CAS! Seems folks like plain ol' squares! Even diamonds (basically squares turned 90º) come in for their share of complaints. "There are too many 'holes' in the targets, that's why I'm missing," is oft-repeated cry! So today, why others may have been speedier, I made some of those cowboys wish they'd kept their heads down... and made others wish they were faster on their feet... as those were another blank area! 45-50 feet might not be a very great distance... but when your entire target area is measured in inches... and still trying to keep a steady pace to your shootin', it becomes far more than a pure speed event! It wasn't all fun & games, on one plate rack, the plates were placed perpendicular to the firing line, in descending sizes... you HAVE to knock down the one in front to reveal the one behind. Luckily, this stage accorded the shooter "free" misses... as any misses on the plate rack didn't count, until you were done, then any plates still standing were counted... with ten rounds to knock down 5 plates... seems simple, no? It is until #3 plate kept bouncing back up and obscuring the 2 behind it! Finally stayed down after my 3rd hit on it! Even the lightly loaded (6-½ grains of RedDot for ~850fps) 225gr .452 from my 45 Colt 1873 made it rebound!
While some folks were pursuing a 24 shot (10 pistol, 10 rifle & 4 shotgun) shooting string in the teens... I was busy keeping a steady pace and "marking" my targets where others weren't! I didn't win any ribbons, came in 3rd (of 3) in my category, but I left a WINNER!
(Sorry, no pics, the SD card went missing from my camera)!

Re: Went Cowboy Action Shooting Today
Sounds like great fun Griff. Our club (ITSASS) shoots the last Wednesday of each month and I foolishly let an old friend talk me into just dressing up and going out to watch. We took no guns or ammo. I nearly cried. They shot again today but church is more important to me. The next match will be Ruckus In The Nations. I'd better check my ffg supply.

Re: Went Cowboy Action Shooting Today
If'n you're gonna dress up... you need to take the guns and SHOOT! My next shooting adventure is going to be the TX SASS Wild Bunch 2015 Championship. If they have enough, I get to shoot the new "senior" category in that... oughta be fun... 10 stages over 2 days, and a 230 pistol round count... you do the match!!!

Griff,
After shooting some sporting clays Saturday morning, Marty and I watched some of the CASS competition at Top Gun yesterday and it was colorful and interesting.
Kind of reminded me of my teen age years when I did fast draw instinct shooting. Lots of fun!

Re: Went Cowboy Action Shooting Today
A friend told me he is writing a book entitled "How I got started in Cowboy Action Shooting for less than $50,000.00 dollars".
Those folks have a great time and do a lot to advance the cause of the shooting sports. If you have not been to one of these events, make a point of going and watching, very interesting and entertaining.

The Wolverton Mountain Peacekeepers annual match is on the third weekend of September. It is our last match of the year. Most of the guys who run it like to head south for the winter and shoot in the dry.
Ten stages in two days with side matches. I shot it clean last year. Real fun time had by all.

Re: Went Cowboy Action Shooting Today
Griff, I'm with you on this. I hate those boring "big and close" 10-10-4 stages. The matches I run have stages with falling plates, swingers, a gadget that throws a can 30 ft in the air, even a Texas star for shotgun. I like to do things like they did back then so I use black powder in everything - no mousefart loads for me!

Griff - Please consider the source, but is all that smoky haze from black powder?
If so, does that mean you do not use smokeless powder?

This last weekend, and for the past few matches, I've been shooting smokeless... Get home, put the guns in the safe, and cases in the tumbler! When I shoot BP, I strip the guns down and clean 'em thoroughly before putting them away. Then the cases get decapped, then soaked in dish soap, rinsed & dried before being tumbled. I generally clean the guns the same evening and soak the brass overnite, then tumble the next day. If the next day has work scheduled, I'm shootin' smokeless. If so, does that mean you do not use smokeless powder?
