There's not a lot to be proud of with the way the UK has gone down the pan lately, I guess our military is still the one thing that stands proud and British.
Bill Millin, a Canadian born Scot played the pipes on Sword Beach on DDay, after the war he met German snipers who said they didn't shoot him because they thought he was crazy!

Now there's a 1/2 hour of my life I won't get back...
But I am a better person for it!!!
Thanks guys!
Now I've got 2 more CDs added to my Amazon Wish List.
Here's another link -- The Drum Line intro of the Royal Marines (also from the Edinburgh Tattoo) is really neat!

In 1983-ish, in the Republic of Korea, at the EUSA/UNC Command the Gurkha Royal Rifles were part of the British Contingent of the Honor Guard rotation, and they brought their Pipes and Drums...My unit, The Eighth United States Army Band had the distinct honor of combining with the Pipes and drums for the weekly Honor Guard ceremony. They were magnificent warriors. The Gurkha Rum they brought with them would sear your mouth, and knock out all but the most hearty imbiber. If you ask to see one of their revered, and feared Kukri Knives be prepared to cut yourself with it. It's an iron clad tradition that if the weapon leaves the sheath, it MUST draw blood. If you are too wussy to do it, the Gurkha will cut himself, and forever hold you in contempt.

Perhaps one needs to be Scottish to appreciate the pipes. I'm not, as far as I know. They always sound is tangling a cat to me. But, I love the ukulele, some folks don't

There is something about that sound. I guess the Scots-Irish is always down in your genes.

I do like the pipes, but I have heard it said the reason they always walk when they play...is to get away from the noise!jeepnik wrote:Perhaps one needs to be Scottish to appreciate the pipes. Saw them at the Cerritos Center out here. It's done tongue in cheek, but they are amazing at what they can do with a uke.

Yes. They make me smile and laugh, but I do like to hear them, and really like what they do with ukes. Its nice to see that they are having fun at what they do, and being successful at it.

I am nowhere to being Scots-Irish, being Italian/Lithuanian myself, yet how I love the sounds I just heard. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Blaine. jd45

Thanks for the link, no way to describe hearing pipes with live fire 155 shooting real targets on the Eastern Border of Afghanistan in the background. Sorry it was a funeral for one of our EOD guys.
