How hard are .348 gas checks to find?

Post by cubrock »

Just curious as I ponder Winchester 71s in general....

I'm guessing a lot of the cast loads for it would require a gas check.

Hornady does not make them anymore. A few places may have some remaining supplies but, other than that, about the only other maker is Gator Checks.

Bullet Swaging Supply (home of Larry Blackmon's Gator Checks)
303 McMillan Road
West Monroe, LA 71291
(318) 387-7257
Fax (318) 325-7034

If you don't need enough to cover the order, let me know, I will spring for 2000.

So, I suppose there is little demand for them, then, if Hornady discontinued them?

Just pondering stocking up for the eventual day when I will get and keep an M71.

I'd stock up...

Were it me, and I thought I might want a 71 someday, I'd stock up on gaschecks now. They will be very helpful to getting the full power out of a 71 if you want to cast for them, and jacketed bullets for them are not cheap... you can do a lot of practice and even hunting with a good .348 cast bullet load. I bought 5000, myself not too long ago...

348 gas checks are getting harder to find and more expensive, but there are still some out there.
Take a look at this site for cast bullets http://www.customcastbullets.com/
This could save you setting up for casting 3 different types of bullet, plus they come with gas checks fitted and lubed. At 14 to 16 cents a piece they are a deal. I have not tried them yet, as I purchased a couple thousand 200grn hornadys off e-bay a year ago.

Hornady Sill lists them on their website for $37/1000

I found a dealer closing them out and got 4,000 for less than $100. Had he had more, I would have bought more. I was hoping he was sitting on a pile in the back and I could have shared the love with you guys, but 4 boxes was all he had.

I doubt the .348 is a round I'd shoot 4,000 rounds in more than a couple decades. :D
