Kinda like my recently snagged Rossi 357/38 spl Trapper

Post by Les Staley »

Have had a couple of Marlins 1894C but they slipped thru my finnars in a fit of stock rotation. What to do with all the ammo/components/brass I've gathered up... Used Rossis are within a couple dollars of a new one, so a new one it is. Bought the 16" barrel, large loop lever. Shoots a pretty tight group with open sights at 65 yds.Image

This little fellow needs a peep sight, and just trying to decide if I want to drill the tang or the receiver.

It is really growing on me.. I didn't think I'd like it, but it's real comfortable..just keep the hand pressed forward in the loop and presto. I can see much improvement in Braztech 92s in the last four years. Have two 44mags, one new in 05, another in 2011. This trapper is worlds smoother and fed 38 spl and 357 secs interchangeably right off the bat. Squirrels don't like it much though..Image

You don't need to do either, since fellow board member Nate "Kiowa" Jones makes/sells a drop-in bolt peep sight that replaces the issue bolt top safety, but retains the safety feature via turning the aperture perpendicular to the bore.

Steve was still in the process of starting up his bolt peep manufacturing when I peeped the 2 Rossi's I had (both 16" Big Loops in .357 & .45 Colt).

I ended up adapting a Skinner LoPro peep sight to an altered safety body for one of the M-92's, mostly because I didn't want to wait.

For the 2nd M-92, I D/T'd one hole in the rear end of the receiver sidewall tops, to mount a Williams 5D-94AE very low on the bolt top (I replaced the interferring bolt top safety with a flat replacement plug).

Both setups zeroed within 5 shots, using the issue height front sight blade - because their line-of-sight was very low, compared to other receiver peep sights.

Of course, if you D/T the tang for the fwd tang peep sight hole, and swap out the issue rear sight for a folder, the rifle can then be set up with dual zeroes (one short, the other somewhat longer).

I have a rossi 92 in .357. I took the safety out and put a peep sight in place, had one put in when I had Kiowa nate jones do a slick action job on it.

Nice shootin' Mr. Staley! As for peeps? I'm partial to the tang variety, but certainly understand the preference and value in a good receiver sight.

That's a great tutorial, Doc AJ! The only thing I do differently is when I've got the receiver in a set up on the drill press, I drill the first hole, then before I move anything, I put the tap in the drill chuck, take the v belt off the motor, and by hand, I turn the tap in a turn at a time, backing it out to clear chips. This eliminates the chance of starting the threads at an angle, and is perfectly lined up with the hole.

I have a like new Interarms Rossi 92 .357 carbine. I just had a Williams 5D put on it.

I'd also recommend the peep from Stevesguns. He put one on mine and slicked it up. It is the perfect handy little rifle, and high on the neat scale.
