Pretty pleased with accuracy

Post by wvfarrier »

The winchester 94AE 44 mag I picked up recently has surprised me with it's accuracy a couple times now. This was 50 yards off hand. Using the winchester 240 grain 44 mag.

Nice, I just don't buy the lever is inherently inaccurate. There is a huge pile of deer without a vote on the topic!

That 44 should be a dandy hunting rifle. How is it sighted, scope, receiver or barrel sight?

Just the factory sights. I did put an orange dot on the front sight blade.

Reminds me of the groups I see with my Rossi .45 Colt Model 92 24" rifle. Even when I feel shaky, she puts 'em right where I want them to go. No other unscoped rifle I own except my PSA AR15 carbine equals it.

It might be that "off hand" is the operative phrase. I've had firearms that did not group well off a rest, but seemed to hit almost everything I shot at offhand..... Just 2 cents worth, and not worth it probably

I agree. In the real world, practical accuracy means way more than what it will do off a bench.

Good shooting.

Then nice group and nice shooting! I've never warmed up to the fibre optic fronts but more and more accomplished lever riflemen like yourself sure are using them. Makes a guy rethink.

There is something magic about 44 cal levers. Many report outstanding accuracy in the Magnum or the Super Magnum ( also called the 444 Marlin). I think my 444S is accurate because of its Micro-groove and slow twist. Any idea what the twist is in your 94AE 44 Magnum?

Kinda the same thing in practice. Ever have feed problems with a pistol cartridge in a long action Winchester, if a guy can call a 94 a long action?

Not exactly the same. I find fiber optic to pick up the light better. Kind of wondering the same thing about the shorter cartridges in a lever. I was thinking of trying to cut down some 45-70 for some powder puff loads.
