No water guns for the Boy Scouts!!
By Douglas Ernst - The Washington Times - Tuesday, May 19, 2015
The Boy Scouts of America has put out approved activities for its members, and water gun fights are strictly prohibited.
A blog for the organization’s leaders said May 6 that pointing simulated firearms at people is not allowed.
“Why the rule? A Scouter once told me this explanation I liked quite a bit: A Scout is kind. What part of pointing a firearm [simulated or otherwise] at someone is kind?” said Bryan Wendell on the scouting website.
The rule is clarified in the Boy Scouts of America National Shooting Manual, which says “For water balloons, use small, biodegradable balloons, and fill them no larger than a ping pong ball. […] Water guns and rubber band guns must only be used to shoot at targets, and eye protection must be worn.”
Negative feedback flowed into the comments section of the blog.
“This makes BSA look ridiculous and has little if any impact on safety,” said Gary Holeiwnski.
“Sometimes I just have to laugh out loud at how idiotic some things in our society have become. We can’t squirt each other with water guns because it is a ‘simulated’ gun. I can’t believe BSA is so worried about the PC police that it has a policy like this,” added commenter Gary USMC.
“Yes, let’s carry every policy to the absurd extreme. That will certainly help scouts shed that geeky image,” added another commenter.
The Boy Scouts of America National Shooting Manual guidelines are to be followed by anyone involved with Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing, Sea Scouting, or shooting sports committees, the document adds.

When did water-gun fights become a "shooting sport"?
Utterly ridiculous.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Are they still allowed to have BSA knives?
I was an eagle scout. One of the most effective confidence building exercises we had in the BSA was a deep- freeze campout. Live, cook, sleep, latrine outside in 3-4 degree weather for a whole weekend and never went indoors. Even the priest came out and held Sunday Mass for us outside. He used the tailgate of a pu for an altar.
I wonder if now they make them camp inside a gym and turn the heat down to 60 degrees at night. Big Mac Meals but the leaders let the fries get cold before they are distributed so it makes it realistic.

I once thought the BSA built strong, reliable, considerate men. Now I'm thinking they want Scouts to become wimpy, uni-sexual, wishy-washy liberals...

Recently read a quote from Ronald Reagan. "Freedom is never more than a generation from extinction"
Makes me wonder if the current generation of children are the last free men on the planet.

I saw on Fox news today that the Boy Scout president gave the OK for QUEERS to be scout leaders. I think that really sucks and no pun intended.

My step-son got his Eagle Scout award in 2013. In Oklahoma, at least, they are no longer allowed to carry fixed-blade knives, they still sell them, they just can't carry them. When Tyler first crossed over to Scouts from Weblos they could still carry belt axes (hatchets) as long as the blades were secured in a protective cover. When Tyler showed up at his first camp out with a kukri they liked to have had puppies. After demonstrating to them that the kukri was superior in all cutting chores over a 12" hand axe they consented. Several other boys dad's had me help them get kukri's for their boys. By the time Tyler got his Eagle they were making them secure their "cutters" to their packs, not their belts.2571 wrote:Are they still allowed to have BSA knives?

Political correctness is killing our society gentlemen. I was a Scout, my son was a Scout, my step-son is an Eagle Scout, my grandson's won't be Scouts.

Re: No water guns for the Boy Scouts!!
It's sad to see how the Scouts have been beat down by the world's wusses. My first bow draw, and first rifle shots were at Scout Camp. Doesn't seem like there's any where for boys to be boys anymore.
Re: No water guns for the Boy Scouts!!
After the comments from the head of the Scouts about changing to fit the current world, that won't be true for long.Ysabel Kid wrote:mikld wrote:I once thought the BSA built strong, reliable, considerate men. Now I'm thinking they want Scouts to become wimpy, uni-sexual, wishy-washy liberals...

Re: No water guns for the Boy Scouts!!
Probably true. Living in SC gives me a little protection. My son has earned his Eagle, and I have a promise to a friend to see his son through to his, but if this indeed is the new policy, I will be out immediately after that.jeepnik wrote:After the comments from the head of the Scouts about changing to fit the current world, that won't be true for long.Ysabel Kid wrote:mikld wrote:I once thought the BSA built strong, reliable, considerate men. Looks like Y2K will be the one and only Eagle Scout in our family...

Not sure what part of "morally straight" (part of the Scout Oath) the BSA President thinks the change in policy supports.

you know Kid, with the upside-downedness of everything, it gives a totally new meaning when an upright Eagle "slips through the cracks", and escapes the stink around us. Congrats to the Scout and his family.

Thanks Grizz. I am very proud of what he accomplished - but sad that it won't mean as much going forward and won't be something that will become a family tradition...Grizz wrote:you know Kid, with the upside-downedness of everything, it gives a totally new meaning when an upright Eagle "slips through the cracks", and escapes the stink around us. I wasn't a Scout. Couldn't get past the "short pants". I was a member of the YMCA. That's "Young Men's Christian Association", though darned few folks even know what YMCA stands for anymore. We started meetings with a prayer. I haven't been associated with the YMCA in decades. I wonder if they are still allowed to pray.
