anybody reloading 218 Bee ?

Post by big bear »

Just loaded up 50 rds, what a PIA! You need little bitty fingers. How many sizings are you getting with non-max loads? I'm using 12 gr H-4227 45gr jacketed loads.

Yes they are when you have big fingers. I have a Ruger #1 and only neck size them so I get about 7-10 loads with mils loads only about 5 with the 35 V-Max and Lil Gun loads.

I made some out of 25-20 R-P casings but they did'nt last any longer.

I had always wanted a rifle in 218 Bee and in the 80's I repaired a Winchester Model 43 for a fellow and fired it a few times. When I saw Ruger was making them I put it on my bucket list but not wanting to spend $650.00 for a new one I just kept looking at the used rifles. One night about 12 years ago I went into a local gun shop that was having a sale to reduce their used rifle inventory where I found one for just under $375.00 so I bought it. I am glad I did because they no longer make them in 218 Bee. It is a fun rifle to shoot because you can watch what you're shooting at throught the scope after pulling the trigger.

I've paid from $1.00 to $1.50 a round, just to get some 'break-in' loads for my Marlin 1894, and some brass when I couldn't find any available at the time.

The rifle was good deal but it didn't shoot that great with factory ammo when I got it until I adjusted a few things so I can see why it was traded in. The rifle was a good deal but I really got a good deal on ammo. My first #1 was in .458 Win and I like the 218 Bee much better.

Winchester sent me a coupon for $100.00 for compensation for an overloaded .22 short that blew the extractor off of my 9422. I repaired the 9422 for under $20 so I had the coupon to use. Dunn's Sporting Goods in Pevely, MO. had 4 boxes of WW 218 Bee marked down to $25 a box so I used the coupon and bought all 4 boxes. Some might think I am lucky but trust me I am not if there is a bad apple I'll end up with it. Case in point. I bought my daughter a Ruger SR22 last year to teach her how to shoot a handgun. She learned a few new words, she's 30, and how to clear malfunctions. This was the worst pistol I had ever bought. After dealing with Ruger twice they finally replaced the barrel.

I paid $75 at the last gun show for a box of Rem 218 and a box of WW 218bee ammo. Not each, but for both. Plus a half box of fired cases. My 218 loves the 40gr Vmax over Lil Gun. Its a Ruger #1S, but I paid a whole lot more for mine!!

You may want to re-check on the availability of factory .218 ammo. I suspect it has been discontinued. I see they are paying over $100. a box on
GunBroker and brass has gone sky-high. Glad I socked a bunch away over the years. Also, through years of trial and error I settled on W-W 296 as the best for loading the .218. I always liked W-W 680 (long discontinued) but have found that 296 outshines it.

The used to list it as seasonal which is probably the same as obsolete. I am surprised they have loaded it as long as they have.

Keep checking in here - that's how I got some from a reloading company (new brass if I recall)...

http://ammoseek.com/ammo/218-bee

I got 'negative' hits for a couple months then suddenly found some and bought it.

Try 1st Stop gunshop in Rapid City, they will ship and are pretty good about prices.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

H.S. Munitions, Inc., Stevensville, MT 59870, is where I found some, as well... 35 grain Hornady V-max in new Winchester cases, labeled "not for use in tubular magazines" (but with the near-zero recoil, and the gummy-tip V-max, I don't think it's an issue....plus, it's a source of BRASS... 8) ). So far, the loads are fine, grouping with open sights in the 2" range at 100 yards; I've not chronographed them.
