HISTORIC Ideal .30 Caliber "Short Range" bullets

Post by w30wcf »

In the early 1900's Ideal came up with the idea of offering lighter versions of some of their standard bullets with the intended use being for what they called “Short Range” shooting. In those days, "Short Range" could be up to 200 yards.

The 125 gr versions worked as they were intended…. plinking, small game hunting, target practice, etc.

The 308206 & 308206-125 were intended for the .30 U.S. Army (30-40). Bullets 308241 & 308241-125 were designed for the .30-30 & .303 Savage. Even so, the bullets could be used interchangeably.

Awhile back I thought it would be interesting to do the same thing to a current Lyman .30 caliber bullet. So, I purchased another Lyman 311041 mold and had it shortened to drop a 125 gr. bullet like the -125's of yesteryear. That was prior to the existence of Accurate Molds, or otherwise I would have had Tom make one.

Thankfully, the 311041-125 has proven to be a good performer in my .30-30’s, perhaps even a bit better than its older brothers :D .......

Fun, fun, fun. :D

That's some awesome stuff there John. I like the 125 weight for my .30-30... although all I've ever shot at that weight are coyotes with the Sierra HP! It does the coyotes no good at all! Which is a GOOD thing! Hit one a few years back at about 40 yards in the back yard... and it picked up the coyote and flipped it about a full 360 circle! Some of that was probably the varmit jumpin' up with the hit..

Your crimp groove is a bit back from where it is on the Sierra... but those holes look as tho' the bullet is well stabilized! But you ain't pushin' 'em as fast as I do these... (~2550fps).

Jack Sr.,
Once again, a post of substance!

What do you suppose is gonna happen when we "old heads" bite the dust? :D

Lyman's version of the short bullet for the 38-55.........37583.......135 grains......next to a NEI 270 grain gas check bullet.......yes, the little 135 grainer is a tack driver. I have shot many of 50 meter chickens and 100 meter pigs with this bullet. --------6

Another interesting 'short range' bullet I've seen is the WOODEN ones used sometimes in the military I think just for training though. Wouldn't want to get hit by one, though...

6...,
Thank you for the kind words.

The historic information that we have put into cyberspace will live on.......at least until Christ returns.....

Yes, your 37583* does a nice job on chickens!

And another one bites the dust.....

reward for a job well done! :D

*I think on that day you were using your 40-65.

I have found that the 31141-125 works well on the steel chickens and very likely the others would too.

w30wcf

what kind of velocities are you getting with those short range 30s?

sounds like pre-300 BLK performance. I wonder how those cast bullets would work in the whisper?

Grizz,
I'm loading them to about 1,150 f.p.s. which is in the velocity range of the early short range cartridges.
They still print well at 1,400 f.p.s. or thereabouts.

Bullet #3 looks a lot like the one I spent my childhood shooting from my 03-A3!
My grandfather loaded thousands and thousands of rounds with light cast bullets for the '06
250 Savage and 257 Roberts. 38's and 45's.
The only mold that I didn't get was the .30 cal.
