First 45-70

Evening all,

Took delivery of a Marlin XLR yesterday, the "grey ghost". Couldn't get a blued 1895, scarce as rocking horse manure down here at present.

I intend to shoot lead out of it, 405gns + 40 gns of H4895 or thereabouts.

My bore solvent is Ed's Red, have used it a lot in my 30-30, jacketed bullets, plus my shotguns, works well.

Any tips re cleaning the 45-70 when using lead ?.

Also, how do I care for the laminated stock ?.

Congrats!

Size your bullets .002" larger than bore and you should not have any leading with that load.

You'll need to slug your bore to find out what size to size your bullets to.

If you are going to use jacketed bullets also, you will want to use a bore foam to clean ALL copper fouling out as copper makes lead stick terribly to your bore.

Ed's Red rocks!

Treat the stock just like wood.

Buy a bore brush for .45 caliber rifle . The .45 caliber bore brushes at the mass merchandizers are for .45 handgun & are too small .

I use Hoppies # 9 for lead .

I never use brushes - just solvent and patches - so far mine has not leaded. I shoot jacketed through it also. Probably helps take any lead out.

hi mark, i love 40 grains of h-4895 with the 405 grain bullet. it's great for plinking and general target practice. i too shoot lead but havent had a bit of leading problems with that load.

They really do shoulder so very nice.

Thanks everyone for your responses,

I took the XLR to a 50m indoor range this morning to sight it in. The scope is a Bushnell Banner 1.5 to 4.5 in Weaver Proview mounts. The same setup as my 336C, 30-30. The trigger was adjusted to four pounds, no creep, it will do for the moment.

So far I am impressed. I sighted it in with 405 grn lead, took half a dozen shots to get it right. I then shot a three shot group, about one and a quarter inches. Couldn't see the point in fiddling about and burning up ammo at 50m.

Next group was 405 gn Remington jacketed, 36gns H4198, a one inch group. The 350gn Speers did about the same.

I decided to quit while ahead.

I am going on a five day hunt, starting tomorrow.
