I have had this 30-30 20 years today. It has 640 rounds through it and shoots the best with 170 gr Federal or 170 gr. Winchester Power Points with will both shoot into 3/4" groups at 100 yds. for three shots. It chronographs 2100 fps for the Fed 170s and 2040 for 170 Win PPs. Fed 150s go 2350 fps. and Win PPs did 2244 fps at last testing. It shot the 160 gr. Leverevolution into 1 1/16" chronographing 2272 fps. It is the bottom rifle in this picture. Excellent rifle.
Now 35 years ago today I met my wife.

Your wife? Man, all along I thought you were a polygamist, OS! You had me fooled, big fella!!! Congratulations for finding your beautiful wife and fine shooting Winchester! Yes, Siree!!!
Very Nice O.S.! A month after you acquired that rifle another milestone occurred.......Brett Favre was drafted in the 2nd round by the Atlanta Falcons, but who cares the rifle looks much better than he ever did!
My 94 Legacy also likes FEDERAL and Winchester ammo best. Performance is impressive, too. The moderate velocity but heavy 170 grain bullets produce consistant straight line penetration; bones and ribs don't alter its path.

Nath - try the Federal Power Shok 170s. They seem to be the best choice. This rifle has never produced a group that I bothered to record.
My Model 88 308 will shoot Federal 150s in small groups but it puts 180 Win PPSP in about 5". So, there is something about these barrels that produces a big variance in results with different ammo. I have a Model 70 30-06 from the same period as the 30-30 that seems to shoot everything well. Rifles are truly individuals.
t.r. thanks for the picture.
Thanks again fellows.

Congratulations on both counts. Hang onto those Imperial CIL rounds they are collectors. That box of shells was made about 5 miles from where I live in a little town called Brownsburg Quebec. My Dad worked there as a carpenter for 25 years. The sporting ammunition division was sold a while ago. All that is made ther now is blasting caps and fuses.
I sure miss being ablle to get factory seconds.

A good rifle and a good woman, now those are riches. It doesn't make any difference which has appreciated the most; both only get better with age. There is a true-ism that I say; if you want something that you can depend on, its old women, old guns, and old cars. My wife hates that saying.
Well Johnny thanks for the reminder. Some things have changed, the old TV died after 31 years but we went modern. Then my yoga trainer went into movies.

Heck, ANY man could own a couple nice rifles! How you ended up with such a fine looking woman is a mystery. Arranged marriage? You are one lucky canine OS!
