357 mag and Accurate 5744

Post by hondo1892 »

Has anyone here ever used 5744 in the 357 magnum? I see that Mike Venturino used it in his lever gun book. But I can't find any data for using it anywhere. I'd like to find some data and try it out since I have several pounds of it on hand. Looking for a load using a 158 gr swc bullet. I already checked the Accurate' site and didn't see any data for 5744 powder in the 357.

Please let me know whether you can or cannot read the link.

So far, I have only used 5744 in .45-70, .40-65, .45 Colt, and .223 Rem. No actual experience with .357 Mag yet, But I may try it in my .357 Max.

My .223 load with a 40 gr V-max is very accurate. (published by Accurate in the same #2 manual)

Thanks Vance. It still doesn't have it listed for the 158 SWC but at least it does for the 158 xtp bullet and the 173 swc. Gives me something to go on.

Using jacketed bullets I used 15 to 16 grains of 5744 in a Marlin 1894 for around 1400-1500 fps, but going by the above link, I'd stick with under 15 grains and see what you get. I got the 'data' from a friend who was an experienced reloader, but you know how that is. That was also quite a few years ago, and I remember my (published reloading manual) 2400 loads for 44 Magnum that were considered 'average' then would be WAY past 'maximum' now, according to the very same manuals new editions. Still unsure why that changed so much, and/or if the same factors might apply to 5744 over time.

Never shot it in a handgun, because I only had a box of 100 bullets when I tried that and I shot 'em all up. Seemed pretty accurate but on tin cans and feral cats - never shot paper. Mostly now I use 2400 just because I have more of it and I save the 5744 for 'grey powder' loads in my Savage ML-10 muzzleloader.

It seems like 5744 is a powder you can use in almost anything.

I have at least twice as much 5744 as 2400 right now. That's why I would like to try some. I'm not looking for real hot loads since it will be shot through my model 28.

Shoot Accurate an email and they'll give you some beginning data! I got loads for my .40-90SBN, .45Colt and 12 gauge from them some time back... they didn't really think the 12 ga. with 5744 was such a hot idea... but, what's experimenting for, if not to learn something?

Forgot to mention that! They are very responsive to reloading questions. I think they just run some of your questions through Quickloads, because some of the data I have received matches what nice folks like earlmk have provided me.

I have asked them enough questions about specific I expected to get ignored or blocked.....so far, no. :D

I use a LOT of Accurate Powder and one of the reasons is their willingness to help and prompt response. Customer service is so hard to find nowadays....

ditto, what did they say? I'm looking for a good 357 load for my new Miroku 357. I'm not going to shoot mouse fanny burbs but also don't want to go full house mags. Hoping that a slower than normal powder can deliver some extra velocity in a rifle without the higher pressures. Plus I have 10 pounds of it.

How would those loads work from a Rossi 92 20 inch .357 carbine?? I wonder about a 180 grain maybe.

I don't have a .357 carbine any more or I'd let you know right quick.

I know my 45 Colt loads jump from 1150 fps out of a 6" revolver to 1400+ out of a 24" rifle .
It will be interesting to see the increase a .357 load gets.

Verrry interesting! QuickLoad agrees almost exactly, except for indicating 1 grain less powder: 13.4 for 1179 fps and 15.0 for 1342 fps. That with the 157 grain Lyman gas check bullet; 1.59" COAL. And a fairly compressed load with the 15 grains. According to QL.

And Jerry, with a 20 " bbl that jumps to 1536 fps with the 13.4 grain load and 1719 fps with the 15.0 grain load, says friend QL.

It does appear that 5744 can be quite a useful handgun powder.

Thank you Brother Earl, I reckon I'll just load some 158swc round with some 5744 to check the Williams 5D when my carbine is ready. Should be done this week, I hope !!!
I do like 5744, Kirk got me started on it for the 45-70, 32wcf and 38-55.
