Hog hunting in Fla

Post by Rusty »

A few people have asked where they might find a place to hog hunt in Fla. I searched thru a local magazine to see what I could find. "Woods and Water" is a hunting and fishing magazine that runs adds and short stories mainly about north Fla.
The first one I have personal experience with.

I took Jr to kill a hog there when he was about 11 years old where he could shoot under controlled conditions. They use a blind and a feeder for kids.

The rest of these I know nothing about. I just off them to give those who are interested someplace to start looking.

I'll post more as I find them.

Sounds exactly the the way they used to do it before firearms were used. The History Channel had a reenacted boar hunt on program on Medieval History, they used the same tactics only they had two groups of dogs. One group for running down the boars and one group for close in work. It takes more than I have to be facing down a wild hog with just a spear, not to mention I am just too old for that sort of thing..

I used to live in Ware Co. Georgia which is on the edge of the Okefenokee swamp. While there I was introduced to Hog Hunting....Georgia style:
We'd drive the dirt roads in our leased area, looking for fresh hog tracks. When we crossed a fresh track the pack of "chase hounds" would be released to run the hog. We're following the pack on foot through the bush, trying to stay as close a possible...holding 2 or 3 Pitbulls on short leashes.
In a typical chase.. the hog would eventually "Bay Up", turn and face the pack. The chase dogs would surround the hog, get in close... but not get too close. Once we got in sight...the Pit's were released. The Pits charge in and grab a piece of the hog...whatever they could get hold of...ear, nose,rump..etc.
Here's where it gets interesting....
Once the Pitbulls sort of have the hogs attention.... I, or one of my Buddies ease around behind the hog, then run in real quick grab the hind legs and lift'em off the ground (kinda like holding a wheel barrow...with tusks..). With his back legs off the ground, the hog is pretty helpless. At this point all you gotta do is throw him on his side...hold him down, and get the loop of rope you're holding in your teeth around at least 2 of his feet. Once tied....you jump off, step back and have a beer, while the Pitbulls are ( literally..) pried off the hog. They don't usually just let go without some encouragement.
At this point...everybody involved, including the hog and dogs are checked for injuries. The hog isn't usually too badly injured and would usually be released to run again another day. If the hog was too tore up, a shot in the head and we'd have a cookout.
I've caught hogs up to 200 lbs using this technique...although the 200 lb hog did take two of us to put down as he was standing in a knee-deep mud/water hole. Quite a mess.

I hunted hogs in Florida with this outfit and had a great time: Seminole Prairie Outfitters.
