New "Remlin" 336C

Post by nralover »

Well, I couldn't resist. I needed another .30-30 lever, and my local store had 5% off all long guns. I looked it over first. Sights were straight, decent wood that was acceptably fit to the receiver, bluing looked even with a decent polish. The action seemed "new" but not rough and didn't bind up at all. Unfortunately, I was delayed on the background check, so I can't bring it home for a couple days. I am cautiously optimistic, and it looked worlds better than some I saw a couple years back!

Seems to me Brian Pearce had an article this past summer or fall in either Hanloader or Rifle about Remington/Marlin owning up to the errors they had made in the past and setting a much different course in the future with the result being better quality products forthwith.

Hopefully you'll be able to say Brian was right.

I hope so! I'll check it for function, then work on getting a WWG trigger in it.

I really hope it turns out to be a good shooter. I don't need another 30/30 but , it would be nice to have a "new" old option. I tried a remlin 336Y last year. Didn't keep it long. Once the bugs are worked out, I may want another Marlin 1894 in 44 mag or 45 Colt! MK

Alright, I got her home! No time to shoot tonight, as I had to stop by for dog and rabbit feed, but I looked the finish over again and I am satisfied. Decent walnut, bluing is pretty good, no jacked up screw heads. The loading gate is surprisingly smooth, and I put several different types of ammo through it to see if it would cycle- zero issues. One a down note, the trigger is gritty and HEAVY. Nothing like our old 336 RC's. No biggie, I had every intention of buying an aftermarket trigger anyway unless by some miracle the factory one had been really impressive. All in all, I am a happy camper.

The last one I saw had nice handsome wood well fit. The action seemed to work fine. Nothing I saw or felt would suggest anything but that it was well fit.

One last thing i will add about the new ones not being as good as the old ones,

A lot of the 336 series Marlins are still steadfastly priced in arealm where they are competing with black plastic stocked bolt guns in "Bang-Zoom" calibers

The workmanship is likely not going to be as good today as 50 years ago, as this now is likely an expensive rifle toproduce with any precision.

Hence, Winchester just said "screw it" we're not even gonna compete in the regular ol huntin' gun market anymore-- and they now make thousand dollar plus guns through Miroku that exhibit the fit and finish of old ---- but that is twice the $$ of what Marlin is stilltrying to do

I wish Marlin luck - i have a newer production youth 30/30 myselfthat i have been wanting to trick out a little with a scout sight and a ching sling. Its a decent gun, but not great --- truth betold, igot it last february and havent fired it yet. It justhasn't stirred my soul i guess

I would have NO issue in buying a new REM-Marlin...I think they fixed most of the issues...my friend back home bought a M-336 in .35-Rem last year, he owns a bunch of older ones and told me that the new one was just as nice... :)

I'm wondering if they have fixed the "Marlin Jam" on the new 1894s? (or, was that a myth?)

No myth... but it's a function of cartridge OAL... and trying to do multi-length cartridges in one rifle. (.38Spl/.357Mag & .44Spl/.44Mag), not an inherent flaw in the building of the gun... It's doable... but takes some real patient reworking of the carrier timing... and a assembly-line gun just isn't going to get it. 1894s that didn't have the "Marlin Jam" were just the lucky ones!
