Look What I Found In An Old Log.......

I tell ya, wonders never seize! It was a nice day today so I decided to split wood. After knocking out a full chord in a couple of hours, I decided to split this huge 3 feet in diameter piece of wild cherry that I've had laying around for a year or two. A good estimation as to the cherry wood's age is about 75-100 years old.

Anyway, I was working the edges and as I reached the center, I pulled the handle on the splitter and as the wood split, I noticed this funny looking thing sticking out of the wood. I said to myself, "this is weird, I'll check it out later".

So...After cleaning up and putting away the splitter, I showed the chunk of wood to my wife, and asked,"what in the tarnation is this?".

Then my daughter, "the world's most smartest person", was stumped. So...........I ask the combined knowledge of the board.....yea, Griff, that includes you........what in the tarnation is this?

My daughter thinks it's horse hair, but......the "hair" is black with some white. There is no barbed wire in the wood......this "hair" is encapsulated in what appears to be the texture of......a bent chicken bone.........look.....I play a lot here....but for real......a dang chicken bone.....but I'm sure it's not.

You can see in the picture that as I was cutting the wood, I did a good job of not screwing it up and you can see where the wood grew around this "encapsulated horse hair in a chicken bone".

My somewhat educated guess is that whatever it is, has been in the wood for the better part of the tree's life as it was located near the center.

For real guys, I'm not playing ......the pictures tell it.....and I'm glad I took pics from the beginning.

Any educated guesses? ------6

After a lot of sawing using the table saw and band saw......you can see where I nipped the "bone" towards the bottom.

that's a strange one for sure, my best guess some one put it there years ago for what ever reason
but the bone is weird maybe a Indian necklace? ive hit a lot of stuff in trees with a chain saw
but the neatest was a lead slug in a 180 yr. old rock elm tree dead center in the middle that was 40 yr. ago, the tree got hit in the very early 1800s

any ways you have a unique find!!!

Not a clue. Can't tell what type of hair it is from the pic... Is all the hair of the same texture?

The texture is pretty much like horse hair....maybe a tad smoother......but while I can understand the black hair....where did the white come from?

Don't really think Indians had anything to do with it as Cherry wood grows about like walnut and has nowhere near the life expectancy that oak or hickory does as the Indians were wiped out from here in the middle 1700's.

Good thinking there Ollogger, as it does look to be man made. Might be on to something.

The "hair" looks a lot like turkey beard inserted in a bone. By the way, turkey beards hair is actually feathers. I can envision a turkey call striker, a bone pen with turkey beard dressing, a neck or head decoration...........

For years nobody could explain how these rocks got into high tree branches way up in trees in Yellowwood State Forest.

It is plastic rope or line of some sort. That is the center of a line with a hard plastic casing, possibly protection against abrasion or insulation. I'm willing to bet that the stuff will melt if held to a match.

Just my best guess.

I have no idea where the tree came from as it was dropped off to me by a buddy who is a tree surgeon and as he see's a million trees a year, I don't have the heart to ask him where he cut it down from....Besides this particular large chunk of wood has been sitting by my wood pile for at least a year, probably 2. It was the log that I kept all of my wedges and other splitting tools on.

Brent has the best logical answer as I think back to yesterday, I remembered why I never split this particular log up....it was the area of the tree where two very large limbs came together and this is a bugger to split by hand....until I bought the splitter last year.

I'm gonna go down to the dungeon right now and do the burn test.-----6

Then I'll probably find out after burning it all up, it was a special ornament for Pocohontus.

I bet that tree was once by a pond or river. IMO, Some fisherman went and took the hook end of a lure he was using and hooked in to the bark of a tree and forgot about it. What y'all see is the back of the lure while the hook is embedded in the little piece of wood on the front of it.
