Air Guns

Post by Budd »

Gentlemen,

In recent weeks there have been several threads about Air Guns, so I got interested and reasearched the topic. I remember the air rifle I had during my boy hood of the 1960's, a Benjamin pump pneumatic that I thought at that time was awsome for a air rifle. But todays air guns rifle and pistols are nothing like what we had in the 60's.

Today we have not only spring piston air rifles and pneumatic air rifles, we also have "single stroke pneumatic" rifles and pistols for target shooting, multi-pump pneumatic (like we had when we were kids but vastly improved) CO2 guns, "Bulk Charged CO2 rifles, and "pre-charged pneumatic" air rifles and pistols. In calibers of .177, .20, .22, .25, 9m/m, .45, and .50 calibers. One pre-charged pneumatic rifle from a S.Korean firm boast a rifle that will shoot a .45 cal. 180 gr hollow point soft lead pellet at 587 fps with a chamber pressure at 2700 psi and will shoot 5 shots all over 500 fps. and with a 3000 psi pressure the 650 fps, and can be gotten with a 5 shot magazine. Beeman has a "gas-ram piston rifle that will shoot a 10.5 gr .177 cal pellet at 1500+ fps. These are not target rifles, these are field/hunting rifles which are capable of suprising accuracy, especally the large 9 m/m and .45 caliber rifles.
The basic PCP rifle starts around $450.00. This is a bare rifle no sights and no assessories. then add the cost of your choice of sights, and assessories. So figure about $800.00 for rifle and basic set-up to $2000.00 for a very elaborate air rifle system.

I find these rifles light-years ahead of the air rifles of the past and I am amazed and impressed.

Check out the "PYRIMID AIR RIFLES" site on the net. They have many different types, makes, and models.

One word: Quackenbush. 'nuff said.

(OK, a few more words...)

The earliest and IMO best PCP gun wa the Girondi as carried by Lewis & Clark.

Made today with modern metalurgy & rubber seals it would be frighteningly good.
