Book suggestions?

Post by yooper2 »

I have very large collection of books about African hunting going back well into the 1800's but I've read them all several times through and am in search of something new. So, I'm looking a bit closer home for some new books. Anybody have some favorite reads about hunting in Alaska, Canada, Maine, etc? Or perhaps some books on the Mountain Men? I'm interested in anything from the 1700's on up. Thanks,

Eric

I recently posted about the books written by Russell Annabell and I recommend them highly for tales about Alaskan hunting and fishing. I think it's well known that Annabell's work is a mixture of truth and fiction but it is great reading.
Look to Safari Press for his and other authors in current print.

non-fiction: If you can find it: "The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth, Mountaineer, Scout, and Pioneer, and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians" was published by Harper and Brothers in 1856.

"Mountain Men and Fur Traders of the Far West : Eighteen Biographical Sketches" Leroy R. Hafen Editor

"The Autobiography of a Mountain Man 1805-1889" by Stephen Hall Meek, Arthur Woodward is available as a reprint, not quite as long or as graphic as the original.

Visit the University of Oklahoma Press website... You'll surely find something that piques your interest!

BTW, today is Jedediah Smith's birthday...

The Long Labrador Trail is a real-life story I found compelling; this is the journal (but very readable, not just a 'diary') of the SECOND journey - the leader of the first one died when they were nearly home. Trying to find a trail from New York to the Hudson Bay area back in the early 1900's - just thinking how a few short years later there were planes and radios makes you realize how much changed in terms of exploration between 1900 and 1925.

I should have mentioned that I prefer non-fiction although it seems a little bit of fiction creeps into many hunting books.
Thank you all for the replies, I've got a few new books picked out and can expand from there. Nothing better than knowing there's new reading material in the mail!

Specifically hunting versus history? And excluding African hunting.
Some I've enjoyed are:
Alaskan-Yukon Trophies Won and Lost by G O Young
Ridge Runner by Getald Averill
Finding Your Way Without Map or Compass by Harold Gatty
When Ducks Were Plenty by Ed Muderlak
Marsh Tales by William N Smith
The Outlaw Gunner by Harry Walsh
American Duck Shooting by Grinnell
The Market Hunter by David and Jim Kimball
Journal of a Trapper by Osborne Russell
Forty Four Years of the Life of a Hunter by Meshach Browning
Dangerous River by R M Patterson
Hunters of Man by John Brandt (Asia not Africa)
Green Hell by Duguid (Bolivia)

There's a mixed bag to take you from South America to Alaska to the American frontier to the Chesapeake Bay. Hope you find some enjoyable reads there.

Thanks Jason, I ordered a couple out of your list. I like history and hunting; historical hunting is tops.
Mr. Murphy, I've got everything President Roosevelt published and treasure it all.

If you like his stuff, the book Theodore Rex, and the one that came before it is a 2-part biography of him and well written.

Forgot to mention Washington Irving's "A Tour on the Prairies" and Osborn Russells Journal. Russell was a real mountain man and his journal is fascinating. Descriptions of beaver sets, rendezvous etc.
Josiah Gregg's "Commerce of the Prairies", about early trade on the Santa Fe Trail. He tells about buying Colt revolving rifles and shotguns for the journey.

Granted it's not about North American hunting; but Man-eaters of Kumaon by Jim Corbett is an awesome read.

George Ruxton was an Englishman who spent time with the mountain men and wrote of his adventures. There are different versions of his work because it was originally published as a serial in magazines. One is Ruxton of the Rockies and here is a link to an online edition of another book of his that you can sample:

Anything written by Jack O'Conner first and foremost !

I am also big on ,

Archibald Rutledge

Havilah Babcock

George Bird Evans

Nash Buckingham

But these last four were mainly bird hunters although Rutledge wrote some about deer hunting in the South and PA .

Bryce Towsley wrote a book about the Benoit's deer hunting in Maine that's pretty interesting .
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !
