I love to see these resurrections, good ol' rifles like that belong on the range or in the forest, not in the closet.

To say that the action was dirty is an understatement. But I sure do love stripping these old rifles down.

Nice job........
Speaking of time capsules, I always check under a new acquisition's buttplate, because sometimes something cool was hidden under there, usually in a recess/hole in the end of the buttstock.
I've found dried blood (A WWI Mauser), rolled up paper money , and bills-of-sale , so far.
I've always wondered what nation's citizen/soldier's blood was under that Model 1893 Mauser's buttplate.......................

As do I. I have found only my Great Uncle's Montana hunting licenses from 1917 to 1921. But they are more precious than money to me.

Where are you getting the extractor from? I'm in need of one myself.

Wisners should also have them. There are two versions. One for the very early model that incorporated a screw on the receiver and the more common one.BrentD wrote:I know of the ones on Ebay, but I couldn't find them on Numerich.

As screw on the receiver for the extractor? How does that work? The extractor has to ride with the bolt, no?Mich Hunter wrote:Wisners should also have them. There are two versions. Please disregard, I was referring to the ejector not the extractor. Not enough coffee in the system today.

Re: Cleaning old lever gun is like opening a time capsule w/
cool post & lets see the finished project!!
I wish I would have taking photos of a 100 year old 1894 src that I bought, it spent
50 years in a sheep herders wagon & another 50 years laying around the house, it cleaned up real well & shoots cast bullets just fine, truthfully I didn't want any body to see it cuz I wasn't sure
if the word poor dumb sap might show up on a post

Cool old gun for sure.
Over the years I have been involved in bring a few of these old gun back up and running. From just cleaning and R&Rs to full blown restorations.
The neatest one was a rebuild/reline/re-blue. What made it so unique was it was a third generation family gun. But, it had been out of the family for 40 years. It had belonged to the grandfather and was used in his youth by the father some 40 years back. The Grandfather had traded it off to a water well driller because the family needed a new well. Forty years later the third family member, the grandson, got the gun back and had me do the work so he could give it to his father. The grandson told me his dad teared up when he seen it.
I feel really privileged to be a part of it.
