Some Canadian Great White North Hunting
Spent some time in the Hinton and Robb areas the last three days and battled minus 25 (-13 Farenheit) morning temps to get things done. Not alot moving but managed to grunt call a buck out on a pipeline and the missus connected on a doe. Had the .444 Marlin with us on the first day to push bush but that technique didn't work and went for the .30-06 on the last couple days.
Broke some trail....
Lynx in 342 yesterday morn....
The other halfs doe shot with her trusty .30-06 Axis.
My buck that answered seconds after i let go with two grunts from a grunt call. Managed a neck shot as thats all he gave me as he was behind a small knoll looking straight up the line at me 223 paces away..
168 grain Nosler Silver Tip. 56 Grains of H4350 at a paltry 2670 fps out of my .30-06 Neck shot at just over 200 yards. Retrieved under the hide on the back just behind his neck...

Great pics and a great hunt. You're lucky to have a wife that hunts with you.
Looks cold. Dropped to 72 here in Cal.

Oops. Double post
Re: Some Canadian Great White North Hunting
I love that lynx photo. My first year bowhunting as a 12 yr old, so many decades ago, I also get that close to a lynx. Could easily have shot him, but didn't. We spent a long time looking at each other. Finally, he just turned and floated off. I have never seen another one.

Congrats to you both! Very nice pics. Any idea how much that buck weighed? Wow those Northern deer are massive!,,,,DT
Re: Some Canadian Great White North Hunting
Glad you got the deer. That snow looks nice hanging on them trees. But that's as close as I want to get. Hate the snow and cold temps like that now.

I couldn't hazzard a guess. Very big though for sure.....Dusty Texian wrote:Congrats to you both! Very nice pics. Any idea how much that buck weighed? Wow those Northern deer are massive!,,,,DT

If you take a girth measurement behind the shoulder, we can get a good estimate of what he weighed on the hoof.

I totally understand. But on the other hand, being at the end of that pipeline and blowing a grunt call and seconds later this dark buck showing his head just over a knoll against a backdrop of all white from the snow on the ground and the frost on the trees, is something i will never forget. It was an amazing contrast in colour. All he gave me was his neck and head to see. I enjoy winter and alot of its beauty.....

That's one nice buck! Congrats! All your pics are nice too. Hard to beat a 30/06 for a deer round!
Re: Some Canadian Great White North Hunting
My vision and hope was to put down a respectable buck with one of my lever guns however the deer had other ideas last week. I will be carrying my 444 for the last two days this year to fill my doe tags...grouse wrote:That's one nice buck! Congrats! All your pics are nice too. Hard to beat a 30/06 for a deer round!

Been in the area about 50 Km NW of Hinton a couple times .... beautiful country. A lot of meat on that buck!

Re: Some Canadian Great White North Hunting
Great pictures, and congratulations on bagging some nice deer!
I've never seen a Whitetail deer as around here we have Blacktails. I am amazed at how heavy-bodied those Whitetails are in comparison. Our deer season runs from mid-September to October, ending before the rut starts. We usually hunt in T-shirts and have to rush the venison to the nearest meat locker to keep it from spoiling in the heat!
