Great Lever Weekend -- Several Holy Grails Found

Post by Noah Zark »

Between a couple small shows and a visit to a couple shops, I managed to find three personal "holy grails" this weekend:

1) NIB Grade 1 Browning 1886 with full magazine

2) Used but not abused plain vanilla Browning BL-22 (no gold trigger, no "engraving," no gold buck head on the lever)

3) USed and slightly abused pre-safety straight stocked Marlin 1894 in 357 Magnum.

I traded a "shooter" Luger P-08 for the Browning 1886. The seller's eyes lit up when he saw it, really fine shape and all matching but wearing an import mark. He held the Loogie and asked if I was interested in anything on the table. I looked around a bit and kinda winced, and pointed to the 1886 in its box with a yellow post-it on the stock, proclaiming $1450. He glanced at it, looked at the Loogie, and said, "It'll have to be an even swap for the Luger; I won't give you any cash boot." So I did my best purse-lipped, frowning, face-scruntch-up expression and counted to 60 in my head before saying, "OK." I had $485 in that Loogie, and I've already forgotten it.

As for the BL-22, I got it from an out of the way dealer, almost left without looking at it because I mistook it at first for a Win 9422. But on second look, it was a BL-22. Filthy inside, a couple spots of freckling on the receiver, but decent furniture. Asking price was $425, I got it for $350 OTD after standing there and listening to the proprietor flap his gums regarding his disdain for Democratic presidential candidates. As I handed him the $$$ he said, "(Heck), I gave $175 for that gun middle of last week, can't be too greedy, can I?" I said, "No, I guess not. Thank you very much."

The 357 Marlin was being walked around a show, and the john selling it was having no luck with takers. He was asking $400, and as luck had it we were both heading out the door at the same time. Well, maybe I sorta hung around near the door for a bit . . . Anyway, I asked what chambering, and asked to see it after he said "357." Pre safety, Microgroove, and "357 Magnum" on the barrel, no mention of 38 Spl. More freckling than I'd like to see on a used/shooter gun, on the receiver, barrel, and lever. Bore was mint. I asked to remove the lever and got permission. Hardly any wear on it or the underside of the carrier -- it hadn't been shot much but spent one too many seasons in the pickup truck, car trunk, or unheated hunting camp. I asked what his best price was, and he said there was a handgun in the show he wanted, and needed $300 to make the difference. I guess I got soft on him because I have him the $300. He lit up, shook my hand, and took off back inside the show.

No pic of the Marlin, it's in pieces getting a makeover starting with a soaking in Kroil.

On the ride home, I reflected that in one weekend I managed to knock off the last three lever guns that I had on my want list.

Famous last words.

Noah, I hope your'e guilt ridden about your '86 trade. If it makes you unable to sleep at night or you find you can't live with yourself, you can make a gift of that rifle to a poor Wyoming cowboy. That should make all well.

That's it. As I was fixin' to walk away, the guy with the 1886 told me "No offense, but I only paid about $500 for that Browning about 20 years ago."

"Then we're even," I said.

If a person is very patient.

I've been looking for a full-length mag Grade 1 Browning 1886 for about five or six years now. Sure, I could have done a purchase from GB, but I've been burned two for three on GB purchases and I'm done with that.

Thanks for the comments!

$500 invested 20 years ago would be worth around $1200 to $1500 today.
Well done!

I very much appreciate the comments.

This past weekend was an example of what I call a "Zen" approach to gun collecting.

In my experience, about two years ago I set clear, unwavering goals for my collecting and shooting interests and I learned to "go with the flow" when it comes to visiting shops and shows.

I forego buying "good deals" if the item(s) is not on my goal list, regardless of how good a deal it is.

If I'm at a show or shop and there's nothing on the list, I don't buy something just for the sake of buying something new.

If I have plans to "make the rounds" of local and semi-local shops, or plans to go to a show, and forces conspire against me (bad weather, client needs, wife's spur-of-moment "plans"), I don't get upset about it. I forget about my gun-related plans and just do what I need to do as others require of me. This past winter I went eight (8) weeks without attending a show due to bad weather or changes in plans. Mostly bad weather. But in that time the available $$$ accrued, and in the meantime I had decided that I was going to trade/sell a few things too. In fact, Sixgun was with me at the Harrisburg show in mid-March when I sold over $2000 of guns that I decided didnt' fit anymore. I knew (from experience) that not going to shows for those eight weeks was happening for a reason.

That reason was this past weekend's acquisitions. It was a setup.

Call it "Go with the flow," or "Zen" or "Putting yourself in His hands." In my case it's mostly the latter, but it's all the same, IMO. Once you set clear goals and stick to them, and you don't try to forece things to happen but allow them to happen, things seem to fall into place, eventually. Not right away, mind, but in time. Like I posted above, I've been hunting for a Browning 1886 since around 2001.

And since I believe the hunt itself is 90% of the fun anyway, I've had seven years of fun waiting on that Browning. I appreciate it all the more for it.
