Free PDF Zane Grey - Man of the Forest
Some of us here, myself included, have moved into electronic books (like my simple black and white Kindle, which is all I need). For those folks, you probably know that there are hundreds of free books that you can download through your service - the good ol' Westerns being among them.
Public Domain books don't always carry a price tag. And some of us use a relatively cheap subscription service that allows us to download one novel, read it, and then upload it for another free one.
Okay, enough of that discussion for the uninitiated. There are many who don't use these electronic readers, but who like to read novels on their computers. Adobe PDF files can be read by anybody with a computer, and I guess most or all cell phone users, these days.
The link below will allow you to download:

Zane Grey's "The Man of the Forest" (408 pages, 44.4 MB)
This is a true classic Western novel that in the Zane Grey fashion that has influenced many movies of the same genre; the great atmosphere of an era and surroundings, the loner who is called by honor to right some wrongs, lots of action, does he get the girl??, and so on.
This was downloaded from a free site and is in the public domain. I ran it through a process so that it is searchable, at least on a Windows system. That means that you can use Ctrl-F and enter a word or phrase to jump to a particular section of the story, or look back for the description of a character, and so on.
As inferred above, you can download a PDF Reader for free from a number of sources. The best one is Adobe's site, to avoid unwelcome bundled software (adware) with the download.

Thank you for the suggestion! I read Zane Grey books as a kid. My grandpa was a Zane Grey fan and had quite a collection of them. Sadly, all but a couple of them were lost when the family homestead burned down a few years ago. After reading your post, I checked iBooks (I use Apple products) and lo and behold, there are a bunch of Zane Grey novels on there and they are FREE!
Kind of like getting an early birthday present! THANK YOU JOHN!

I started really liking the 'public domain' stuff when I came across Custer's Journal as he headed west for the first time... I'm sure you guys can find it using the usual internet searches; if not, let me know and I'll find the link.

I don't know why, but there is something that just feels right about a book, paperback or hardbound, that is missing and soulless in the electronic media. I can read my Continuing Education on paper and get through it easily, but when I do it on a computer, it takes twice as long and is much more difficult. 10 to 12 sentences at a time are all I can look at on a computer.

Piller, truly - to each his own. I know where you are coming from. I spend a significant time away from home, in some office that is usually overrepresented with health and womens' magazines, so the Kindle works for me.
Gascozark, I am glad to have been helpful. That's how it works here!

John, it is actually a good thing that we are all a little different. I would go crazy if we didn't have some differences and some reasons to discuss things with friends. By the way, my Parents have all but 5 of the Zane Grey books that were published in the hardbound red and tan color with the gold colored letters on the spine. My Mother's Father read them and got us all started on his books. My Dad's Father read Superman comics and the works by Plato, Hume, Plutarch, and a few others in that vein. He died before I was born, but he left his stamp upon his family, and that is probably why I am so full of contradictions. Comic books were good back then, Zane Grey was very good, and Philosophy makes you weird. That just won't all mix.

I considered a philosophy major in college, at one time.
Then, checking with my friends who were enrolled, and one or two who had graduated, I found them to be more confused about life than when they left high school!

No offense intended to those who ended up with Philosophy Fudd degrees...

Thanks John
My latest thing has been to put my favorite audio books on a USB flash drive.
Flash drives have been around for many years and I am just now discovering them, oh well better late than never.

J35nut, You are welcome.J35nut wrote:...My latest thing has been to put my favorite audio books on a USB flash drive.
I tried that for a while but it just doesn't work for me; my mind wanders when I can't read it myself at my own pace. But for a while I subscribed to Audio.com which allowed all sorts of downloads at what I think was a fair price.
There are also a lot of free download sites - you can check them out by Googling "Free audio downloads."
You'll have to plow through several that are actually free on a 30 day trial basis, but some are genuinely free, such as:
http://www.librivox.org
I also downloaded a slew of great old radio shows in a similar fashion - old stuff like "The Inner Sanctum" which used to scare me at night when I listened to it after the parents though I was asleep, funny stuff like "Amos 'n' Andy," tons of different venues, "The Shadow," "Rocketship XM," and so on. And yes, - "Gunsmoke!"
Hopefully, you can still find free downloads by Googling "Old time radio downloads" or something similar.
