OT - Two hands pistol hold- When ?

Post by preventec47 »

Last week there was reference to an old 1957 gun magazine that
had lots of neat stuff but what I noticed was that the competitive
pistol shooters were all holding their pistols with one hand.

I dont see that today and maybe there are matches where one
hand hold is required ... I dont know. If not, when did two hand
hold technique begin to be popular?

Depends on the type of competition. Bullseye shooting is still a one-handed affair, as far as I know. Two-handed shooting became the style back in the '50s and early '60s when Jeff Cooper, Jack Weaver et al began their informal "leatherslap" competitions in California, which they developed into Practical Pistol. From that a variety of "combat" shooting games evolved using two-handed holds. As the style was popularized it found its way into FBI and other training programs. Until then, law anforcement and military handgun training focused on one-hand, up-close shooting, and the question of "which is best?" has raged since then. A dumb question, really, as both styles have their place.

Bullseye is the one handed one

NRA Bullseye or national match handgun as its sometimes called is the one your referring to. It used to be very popular, and is in some places, with hundreds of shooters. The nationals are held at camp Perry every year. Its great fun, very challenging and one of the greatest learning experiences you can have. I shoot allot of it, and its hands down my favorite competition. Every shooter can do it, but most don't believe they can, after a few months they realize they can indeed do it.

I grew up being taught by to shoot with one hand. When I started in LE we shot PPC, which puts at least some emphasis on strong/weak hand shooting. Nowadays practically all LE training is two-handed and the distances, in comparison to PPC, have been divided by THREE.

I have maintained my own separate shooting regimen over the years and in '06 I began shooting offhand again, with the gun I carry on-duty. While the '2700 Boys' have nothing to fear from me, I have found one-handed shooting feels natural again and I can now hit about as well and fast with one hand as I could with two, before. Here's the story if anyone is interested.

I believe people were shooting 2 handed long before it was "popular", I think Keith was doing it in the 20's, and think he learned about it from old timers.
