Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
6pt I thought I might get some info from you or others about a Winchester 101 12g. I have decided to get one soon, with 26 or maybe 28" barrels, choked skeet/skeet. I am wondering is there any of these to stay away from, for example are the Japanese guns as good as the rest etc? I don't need a fancy model but I'm thinking about buying used so as to not spend 1800 or 2000 on one. I love shooting the Brownings, but long for a shorter set of barrels. I guess a Citori is not out of the question either. I'm gonna go try some out next week in town and thought I pick you guys brain first

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
I don't know about Winchester shotguns, new ones anyway.
I use a Remington 1100
But there's a man here in Mississippi that deals in Brownings
He bought them all over the country, when waterfowl hunters had to go to steel shot
Don't ask me why they sold their Brownings, thats beyond me
But he invested in Brownings instead of silver, he's got some purty good deals
If you get interested, I'll try to get you a ph number
I'm not a saleman for him just talked to him a few months back
He said he had hundreds of them, and all the correct paperwork

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
It is my understanding that the older Winchester 101's were made in the same plant in Mirouku that the Jap Charles Daly and the Mirouku guns themselves were made . I am sure I spelled the name of the place wrong .
Anyway the older Winnie 101's , the Charles Daly guns and the Mirouku guns were all known for very good dependability provided they were maintained well . Same can be said for the Browning Citori guns .
The 101 Pigeon's skeet was made before the Diamond and if it were me I would prefer the older gun .
Being as you're already well acclimated to your Broadway might I suggest you look for a Superposed skeet ? The price over a nice 101 might only be a few hundred . If you keep your eyes open you should be able to find a 26" Superposed skeet for $1500 or less . The same in a Pigeon 101 Skeet is gonna be in the $1000-1300 area . With that being said you might be able to get a nice used Citori skeet 26 or 28 inch for about $800-1000 .
Just my opinions and you might be able to find any I mentioned for less depending on the time and place .
I do however believe the Superposed gun will hold it's value and possibly increase at a better rate then the 101 , Daly or Citori .

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
Octagon , FWIW I got a Superposed 12 gauge 26" skeet that's about 95% or better at public auction for $1000 about 6 years ago . The same day I bought a Superposed 12 gauge 3" Magnum in 98% also for $1000 . About 3 years ago my pop bought a second year production Superposed 20 gauge field in about 85% for $2000 , about 2 years ago I got a 95% Superposed 20 gauge skeet for $1200 . This just goes to show you deals can still be had .
I want a 28 Superposed and also a 410 . But starting area for these in a condition I could live with are 5G's and up . So I may never have a 28 or 410 Superposed .

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
This holds no relevance to your original question . When I was growing up my pop didn't allow pumps or semi auto shotguns in our house . You started with a single barrel and then went on to a SxS generally a Parker , Fox , Smith or some English gun . My first SxS was a 12 gauge WW Greener I still have . Anyway the ONLY O/U that was ever mentioned in our house at the time was the Browning Superposed and occasionally the Remington 32 or Krieghoff 32 but at the time my pop didn't have the cabbage for a Superposed or a 32 so we made do with Parkers etc . Which is most likely the reason I can do almost as well on the skeet trap or sporting ranges as I can with an O/U . In the game field the two barrel styles run neck and neck .
Now with all that being said I can do about as well with a Rem 1100 , Browning A-5 , Winchester Model 12 or an 870 . I just get ALOT more satisfaction from SxS's and O/U's .

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
While is wasn't a Superposed , I had a Browning Citori Upland Special 16 gauge a few years back when I still bird hunted a lot . This jewel had 24" Invector choke barrels . It came to me with a gloss finish and a hard rubber buttplate . After a couple seasons chasing grouse I re finished the stock in Tung Oil and had a Pachmayer Old English pad added . I killed a bunch of birds with that one in the grouse woods , dove fields and quail brush . Only problem was if the birds were close I shot quick with that gun and mutilated the birds . I might add I used that gun to shoot the first turkey I ever killed on the wing no less .

I appreciate the info. Dang, you are a veritable shotgun encyclopedia. The place I'm headed to in town will have a ton of citoris I'm sure. I have shot Brownings a long time, and have several trap guns. I doubt I'll shoot any more trap, but you make a good point about the Brownings, and they do hold value well, the 101 s do too, but only in smaller gauges as far as I can tell. Not sure where this 101 itch came from, but one thing for sure, I am spoiled on shooting nice 0/u's, would not own an auto, and could not hit a bird with a s/s if you tied it up and blindfolded it, and stuck it's feet down the barrels!

It has been my experience that you will find a 101 a bit lighter then a Superposed in a 12 gauge skeet version .octagon wrote:I appreciate the info. Dang, you are a veritable shotgun encyclopedia. In the 101's the Pigeon Grade skeets or earlier ones seemed lighter to me then the later Diamond grade . The Daly's should be about the same weight as the 101 Pigeon as they were virtually the same gun . And if my memory still works a Citori skeet will also be a bit heavier then a 101 Pigeon .
Now with all that being said I'm quite fond of the Superposed guns as well as the Remington 32 and Krieghoff K-32/80 .

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
You have got me interested in the Citori, I don't mind Heavier weight on O/U's, I think it makes em swing good, and helps with follow through and recoil. With a good fitting gun, recoil has never been an issue for me with shotguns. If it saves me some dough, even better.
I have had good experience with decoys ESP mojos which I stated using a few years ago, it does bring in a few more birds, have you tried em? Have had a few dove actually try to "do" those mojos on two occasions.

I used to hang a couple over the power lines , and put my back to the power pole . Usually one bird on each side with the sun to my back . Usually if they came in behind me I could see their shadow when they hovered to land . Then you could turn around and pop them before they landed or when they saw you and took off .

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
If you go the Citori route might I suggest you look for a Citori Lightning it should have a closer feel to your Superposed guns . The Citori Lightning has the round knob pistol grip . I had a Citori Lightning in a 16 gauge with a 28" Invector choke barrel that was a very nice one for dove or sporting clays .

Re: Winchester 101 question for 6pt and others
Good call on that. I'm sure they'll have both on hand at this shop, they have a ton of shotguns and quite a few levers. I was in town today, but did not have time to get to gun store. I did not know that Citoris are round knobs, a much better look than square for sure. Will leave tomorrow for three day hunt, rain is predicted, which spoils a dove hunt quicker than anything, but I have chores to do that rain will not interfere with.
6pt, you have been a huge help with "arming" me with some good in depth info before I spend the money. I appreciate it. There are others on this board who are into shotguns, but mostly s/s's it seems. Nice to pick the brain of a fella that knows his O/U's as well as s/s. Good hunting.

I have 2 101s and both are "skeet" guns. I don't know of anything to avoid aside from the usual with any used gun.
