I recently bought some Winchester .223 ammo from Bass Pro Shop with a gift card I had been given. Looking for heavier bullet they had a 64 grain soft point. I didn't open the box in the store, maybe a mistake. When I did get home I opened the box (of 20) and found that several of the bullets were seated deeper than the rest. One in particular only had a little over 1/4" of the bullet protruding. I e-mailed Winchester and they were very good about getting in touch with me. They sent me a label and the little brown truck came around and picked it up.
When I talked to the Winchester rep I told him that it looked like some of these rounds got out of the factory without getting a crimp on them. He asked, did you say those were the 64 grain bullets? I said yes. He said we don't crimp those bullets.
I didn't think they did that but I guess so. Now I'm wondering if that round is suitable for use in a semi auto?

Re: Ammo information
I would be a little hesitant to use them in a Semi Auto. At least, more than single feeding from the open bolt and dropping them right into the chamber.

Re: Ammo information
I would not use them in an auto. Lots of reasons not to. Why would you ask if they were safe to shoot if you sent them back??? That part of it I would like to know.

Re: Ammo information
I posted this for 2 reasons. First to say that Winchester does take care of problems.
Second to let others know that it seems to be their policy not to crimp 64 grain bullets they load. I pretty much thought it was standard policy to crimp ALL BULLETS. Maybe even an extra strong crimp in a caliber that is mostly used in a semi auto platform.
The box did state that this loading is suitable for deer and antelope, which is what I was considering.

Re: Ammo information
I'd take them back to Bass Pro Shop and return them and let them deal with Winchester.
Black Hills makes or at least made a real good 62 grain loading with a Barnes TSX bullet

Re: Ammo information
That could be WM except that it's an hour and a half drive to Bass Pro at present.
I was also thinking that Winchester might be able to fix a problem they have.

Re: Ammo information
This is an incredibly effective load. Deep penetration, average expansion to .45" and average weight retention of 100%, with similar results even through a car door. Through glass (a tough situation for most 5.56 bullets) the petals often come off, but the bulk of the bullet stays together and still penetrates really well.wm wrote:I'd take them back to Bass Pro Shop and return them and let them deal with Winchester.

Re: Ammo information
The Winchester 64 gr. PP was issued by the California CHP and is well known as an effective load. Sounds to me as though they had a problem with neck tension in that lot of brass.
