Where to hunt doves?

Post by crs »

Where they are of course, in my back yard!

Every morning and evening, 50 - 100 gather to feed on the seed berries of the prickly ash trees along our driveway. They are mostly European banded doves with a few mourning doves.

But no, shooting them in the yard is off limits, so I will drive 4 hours west to hunt with a dozen DWWC buddies where we can shoot all we want and drink whisky and smoke cigars to boot. Actually , that is not so bad. :)

I am taking two Parker 20s and will start September 1 with the one that I grew up shootnin - a Damascus barreled 20 on a 28 gauge frame. After 86er brought it back to life a few years ago, it has not been shot much until I bought some RST 2.5 inch low pressure shells. In two trips to the range, it has turned clays to powder out to 40 yards when I do my part, so wish me luck.

I hunted doves in CA with my friends... But never found an appealing way to prepare them... So I don't bother any more. Love the shooting... but if the wife & I don't find it digestible, she doesn't approve the expenditure. I get a bunch around here also... currently a "safe haven".

Breast, wrap in bacon, pin with toothpick, grill gently and not too much.

They can be superb.

I'll have to try that, my culinary skills are limited...

This one is not too complicated, but like all wild game, overcook at your peril.

I should add, if you do not grill with bacon regularly, keep the fire low or, better, push the fire to sides and put the meat in the middle to avoid grease fires.

Brent

Great advice and recipes.

I too will be out for dove on Monday with a shotgun 86er brought back to life, my 12 bore Midland SXS hammer gun. Good luck to you

Griff, was that not you eating quail and dove appetizers at the Aussie Invasion Game Dinner?
Maybe not - could have some one that looks like you.

Researching "squab" receipes, I was warned if over cooked, the meat can develope a "liverish" flavor.
Maybe just grind 'em up and put in the chili. - Brian

I really like dove breast with a slice of jalapeño then wrap with bacon and grill. We vacuum pack the breast until super bowl sunday then cook up all we have.
