Photos, including a Levergun, you will want to see

Post by 7.62 Precision »

So my father-in-law, my wife's brother and her sister's husband [two different people - she's not from WV :D ]), and my wife's grandfather all came for a visit, so we took a bit of a trip, with my two oldest boys.

I took a lever gun OF COURSE.
Image
My wife's Rossi M92 .454. She warned me not to tear it up, but she let me take it.

We saw some cool stuff, that I did not need a rifle for. A fly-rod was more useful.

So, we put the flyrods to good use and saw lot's of cool stuff, non of which was appropriate to shoot with a .454.

So I didn't even get to shoot the levergun. I figured that .454 was a little bit of overkill for a rainbow trout.

So why did I bring it along?
Well I got some cool photos:

But mostly it was because of this guy . . .

I had to stop posting photos of the bears - there were too many and I was getting confused on which I had posted already.

Everyone was thrilled with the fishing, the boys were happy, they saw 29 bear (some overlap from day to day), a bunch of mink, all kinds of birds and fish, a beaver (real beaver, not the plane), white leeches, caught a frog, and one got bit by a lamprey. Plus they caught a ton of fish. several times we were within about 10 - 15 feet from bear, and once closer - it was a tense situation.

My relatives were pretty happy about the fishing and the wildlife, especially the bear and eagles. None of them had flown in a float plane before.

That's what it is; a lamprey.

This is a bit different from the fishing I usually do. While I was out having fun, my wife was doing the hard work dipnetting sockeyes for the freezer.

My kids had a bit of trouble with the fishing on this trip, because the salmon were almost all too red to eat and the dollys and trout were catch and release in that river. They are used to fishing for meat, so they couldn't understand letting them go. My 10 year old was in tears, "Why are we hurting the fish if we can't eat them? You always told me we don't hurt anything unless we are going to eat it!"

The beaver is about the best plane ever built for bush flying, along with the single otter, and the goose is pretty cool.

Most of the otters today have been converted to turboprops. I understand the efficiency, but it still makes me sad.

Man, I'm out here in Tununak and the internet is slow. Took me half the day to post those photos. What A funny thing to say. A few years ago, I would never have said Tununak and internet in the same sentence.

Actually, it was four days, and then we fished on the way home to, so we could bring back a couple fish.

In the mean time, my wife spent two days in the mud on a creek dipnetting and cutting fish, so we have fish in the freezer again.

Yeah, that's how I traveled when I was growing up. The only way in or out of the village i lived in was boat or float plane, and by boat it was a full day to the nearest big (for us) town.

Whn I was a kid, we described airplanes as planes and wheel planes. I still call planes with wheels, "wheel planes." As a boy, I was astonished that people would be comfortable in a wheel plane, and even today I feel uncomfortable flying over water in a wheel plane.

When we were flying back on this trip, there was chatter on the radio concerning a Beaver that was spotted floating miles out in the ocean. A plane that was flying near changed course and landed to assist. They found several people standing on the floats fishing.

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures. Beautiful country.

My anual Allagash trip is looking pretty pathetic now!

Coolest plane I've ever been in was an old Beaver they have in Greenville on Moosehead lake.
I heard its the one they used for a magazine add for Camel cigarettes back in the 80's.

That looks like mother nature at her finest. Although with that many bears I doubt I'd be willing to put the 454 down long enough to take a pic of it.
Looks like there are some nice trout to be had up there. What are the bright red fish?

The bear were not too scary. The sows with cubs meant I moved forward with the rifle in my hand, and the one bear that you see the butt-end photo of walked right into the middle of us and acted nervous and confused, so it was round-in-the-chamber and rifle on the shoulder at that point, with the bear only 7 or 8 feet away at the closest point. Otherwise I would have gotten some really cool photos of him. He stretched out one paw (with his head turned away as if to keep us from seeing him) and hooked a fish with one claw and took off. The fish had been dropped by an eagle, I think.

The red fish are sockeye salmon (red salmon) We only caught three that were not yet red.

The trout, as you can see, were very small. The sockeyes were late in dropping their eggs this year, so the big trout were not yet in the river yet.

No need, she caught them far faster than we were - it took her maybe 3 to 5 seconds every time she went into the water to come up with a trout of dolly in her mouth.

Mink. Like most members of the weasel family, they are bold and inquisitive. The light was wrong and the photo did not come out, but one swam out and climbed up on someone's legs.

You can tame them easily, too.
