Info on a Winchester 94?

Post by JoeArizona »

A pawn shot I frequent has a Winchester 94 (says so on the tag) that I can't find any information on...of course I ain't that smart about these things like you guys are.

- The serial number is 1117109, looks like an 1939 or 1940.
- I has a long barrel..26"
- It has a short magazine tube
- There is an endcap on the forearm, not a band
- It has a round barrel
- It is 30-30
- It is marked $599 (just threw that in there, probably not original price  )

I have not been able to handle it yet, but the metal looks ok, but the wood has been refinshed.

Is this an unusual configuration or do I just need to get out more? I sure don't need another one, but we all know how that "need" thing works.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Sounds like a Model 64 configuration...so it could be a "Frankenchester" or it could be a 64 and the person who told you about it just thought it was a 94 or it could be a 94 configuration/custom order or it could be........
With out pics or you having looked its difficult....and I am not the Winchester 94 guy....so one of them may come on and know exactly what it is...

But it would sure be interesting to see it and maybe some pics...

Thanks Scott...that was quick!

I believe you are correct...down to the pistol grip stock.

Looks like a Model 64...not a deluxe model either. Just mislabeled.

Thanks for your help!

Per Winchester, that SN dates from 1940. ( http://www.winchesterguns.com/support/f ... uments.pdf - scroll down to PP9)

The Model 64's were introduced in 1932 @ about SN 1087000, with the SN's running concurrently with Model 94 SN's.
Model 64 & Model 94 barrels were so stamped/marked, respectively.

Model 64 barrel length was standardized @ 24", except for a no-cost optional 20" length available for all chamberings during the first year of production; and also an extra-cost optional 26" length for the .219 Zipper (only) Model 64.

The 26" barreled Model 94 Rifle's (All "rifle" models, actually) were discontinued in 1933, around SN 1090600.

As a Frankenchester, it's worth the $600 IMHO - if it's a gennie & lettered, much more.

Also, the mdl 64 will have a "fatter" forend than the rifle configuration in a mdl 94.

But, Pete, weren't they still available as custom order?

IDK. But, what I do know is that anyone with deep enough pockets could get pretty much anything they wanted from the Winchester Custom Shop, prior to 1964 (and maybe later, too).

However, w/o a Cody letter to that effect - no tickee, no laundry. ;) .

I got a chance to take a look at the Winchester in question. They mislabeled it as a 94 with 26" barrel.
It is really a Winchester 64 with a 24" barrel. If serial numbers are the same as the 94's they probably just looked at that and dated it assuming any Winchester lever is a model 94.
It does have a slender forearm which could have been done when the wood was refinished.
Thanks for your help guys.

The way it sounds to me, if it has a 24"(rifle) or 20"(carbine) barrel it would/cound be correct for a model 64 of the serial number range listed. The serial number as per the Cody Museum, Winchester Polishing Room Records indicate manufacture date on that rifle is 1936. The pre war Model 64 Winchester has a slender forend on the standard model 64 rifle or carbine, with the Whelen style semi-beavertail (fatter) forend on the deluxe rifles and carbines, all post war model 64's have the fatter style forend. I have had several model 64's through the years as you are describing. The model 64 & 55 share the same receivers/serial numbers and many parts with the model 94 and are sometimes confused, the model number will be stamped on the left side of the barrel along with the caliber designation. If you wish to verify my info go to the Winchester Collector's Society website and post a question on that forum addressed to Bert Hartman he will reply with just about any info you may request on Winchester's of any model during the pre-war or early post war era.
