As reported in another thread, Earl, his friend George and I popped a few caps with lever guns yesterday out in juniper country. Lever guns were mostly .303 Savage and .35 Remington; Earl and I were both using his cast bullet handloads. Boys, I am here to tell you that Mr. McKinney can shoot! Earl ran five cans in a row offhand at 50 yards with iron sights and did serious damage at 100, at which distance I could hardly see the darned things.
I am sorry I didn't get a group photo of the lever guns, but here's one of Earl killing cans with his five-digit serial saddle carbine rebored to .35 Remington:
Glad you had a good time. It is kind of hard to have a bad time shooting cans, or at least in my experience, but I still am glad you had fun.

Quite a bit of chatter on www.24hourcampfire.com "Savage Collectors" forum about converting 99s to .35 Rem. Apparently it's been done for a long time and works very well. My guess is that most are shot out .300s or .250s or the same with abused barrels (cut to illegal length, bent, ringed, tapped into near bore, etc.).
